In January 2006, de Jong moved to Hamburger SV and signed a four-year contract. With his goal in the Champions League qualifier against CA Osasuna, he brought HSV into the Champions League in August 2006 . After three years in Hamburg, de Jong moved to the English Premier League club Manchester City during the winter break of the 2008/09 season and received a contract for 4.5 years. In the 2016/17 season , de Jong made 18 appearances in the Süper Lig , in which he scored one goal. After de Jong had not been taken into account in the 2017/18 season , his contract was terminated on January 5, 2018. He joined until the end of the Bundesliga season 2017/18 the 1. Very tough game
In 2010, de Jong came under international criticism for harsh fouls . First the Dutchman broke the leg of his opponent Stuart Holden in a friendly against the USA in March , and a short time later he was struck by a karate-style kick in the chest of the Spaniard Xabi Alonso in the 2010 World Cup , for which he only struck saw yellow card. On October 3, 2010, he inflicted a double leg break to his opponent Hatem Ben Arfa in a Premier League match, which went unpunished in the game. Thereupon he was discharged from coach Bert van Marwijk for the upcoming games for the European Championship qualification of the Dutch national team because of "repeatedly rude style of play".
