Career
As a player
As a midfielder or striker , he came 390 times in the Eredivisie , the top Dutch league, and played once in the Dutch national team . His playing career led him to AZ Alkmaar and MVV Maastricht, among others . His biggest and only title as a player was winning the Dutch Cup with AZ Alkmaar in the 1977/78 season .
As a trainer
Beginnings and Feyenoord Rotterdam
Van Marwijk coached the first youth teams in the last few years of his active football career. Through the stations FC Herderen, RKVCL Limmel, SV Meerssen and Fortuna Sittard , he finally ended up as a trainer at Feyenoord Rotterdam in 2000 , where he was employed for four years. His greatest success here was winning the UEFA Cup , which he won 3-2 in the 2002 final against Borussia Dortmund . His successor in Rotterdam was Ruud Gullit .
First stop in the Bundesliga: Borussia Dortmund
On June 1, 2004, van Marwijk and Dick Voorn signed a two-year contract with Borussia Dortmund, which was extended early on May 28, 2005 to June 30, 2007 and on July 26, 2006 again to June 30, 2008. On December 2, 2006, however, van Marwijk confirmed press reports that he would leave the club on June 30, 2007. Two weeks later, on December 18, 2006, he was dismissed as Borussia's head coach. The Dortmund team signed Jürgen Röber as his successor .
Return to Feyenoord and Bondscoach
In the 2007/08 season van Marwijk was again coach at Feyenoord Rotterdam. He signed a two-year contract in the summer of 2007, which he did not fulfill, however, as he took over the Dutch national team after the European Championship in 2008 as the successor to Marco van Basten . Nevertheless, he led the team to victory in the cup . His contract with the Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond was extended in March 2010 up to and including the European Championship 2012 . With the Dutch national team, he made it to the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which was lost to Spain 1-0 after extra time . At the European Championship 2012, the Netherlands lost all three games in the preliminary round under his leadership as coach and were eliminated. For the Netherlands it was the worst tournament result ever. On June 27, 2012 van Marwijk resigned as national coach.
Return to the Bundesliga: Hamburger SV
After a little over a year without a job, van Marwijk took over the Hamburg SV Bundesliga team, which was in 16th place in the table, from Thorsten Fink, who had previously been dismissed . He returned to the top German league after about seven years. At HSV, van Marwijk signed a contract until June 30, 2015 with an option for another season and brought assistant coach Roel Coumans to the Elbe . After an initial increase until the winter break with 14th place, the club under van Marwijk set a negative club record in February 2014. Never before had Hamburg lost seven games in a row in their 51-year Bundesliga membership. After a 2-4 defeat at the bottom of the table Eintracht Braunschweig , van Marwijk was finally dismissed on February 15, 2014.
National coach of Saudi Arabia
On September 1, 2015, van Marwijk became the coach of the Saudi Arabian national soccer team . After failed negotiations about a contract extension, the association separated from him in September 2017.
National coach of Australia
In January 2018 van Marwijk took over the coaching position of the Australian national team , in March it was announced that he would be succeeded by the Australian Graham Arnold after the 2018 World Cup . At the World Cup, van Marwijk retired with the Australians after the group stage.
United Arab Emirates national coach
From March 2019 to December 2019, van Marwijk was the head coach of the United Arab Emirates national team.
