Capcom ( Japanese 株式会社 カ プ コ ン , Kabushiki-gaisha Kapukon ) is a Japanese video game developer and publisher based in Osaka . There are agencies in Sunnyvale , London , Hong Kong and Hamburg . The acronym stands for Cap sule Com puter.
history
Capcom was founded in 1979 by Kenzo Tsujimoto as IRM Corporation. The first games developed by Capcom were only playable in the arcade . Among them were the shoot 'em ups 1942 and Vulgus . The in-house Capcom Play System was used for the arcade games .
In 1985 Ghosts' n Goblins appeared , which should become the cornerstone of a series. The 1987 games Street Fighter for arcade systems and Mega Man for the Nintendo Entertainment System should also result in numerous sequels. The maintenance and continuation of established series is one of the trademarks of Capcom.
From 1995 to 1996, Capcom Coin-Op , a subsidiary of Capcom USA, produced pinball machines and arcade machines .
In 1996 Mikami Shinji created Resident Evil for the PlayStation , which became a great success and helped the genre of survival horror to break through. Based on the Resident Evil series, other series such as Devil May Cry , Onimusha and Dino Crisis were created .
The implementation of the games on different platforms brought Capcom the charge of relying only on the established series and cannibalizing them. The company responded with a number of innovative games that hit the market in the 2000s , including killer7 , Viewtiful Joe, and PN03 .
At times Capcom also produced various pinball machines (including Big Bang Bar ), but due to developments in this market, no further machines have been developed since 1999.
