information | Bionic Commando is considered a classic in video game history and a controversial game. |
Bionic Commando (Original title: Top Secret: Hitler no Fukkatsu ) is a Japanese action game from Capcom that was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987 . In the following year, implementations for numerous home computers appeared ( ported by Software Creations and distributed by Go! ). The game is known for the fact that the main character in the game cannot jump. In the USA the game was subjected to censorship and renamed Bionic Commando .
story
The Imperial Army wants to finally manufacture the Albatross, a legendary secret weapon of the Nazis. To do this, their leader, General Weizmann, needs the help of the only person who knows how to finish the Albatros correctly: Adolf Hitler . He has to revive it. The FSA (Federal States of America) sends out Super Joe to prevent this. However, the FSA loses contact with Super Joe. The protagonist of the game - Rad Spencer - is dispatched to save Super Joe and stop the plans of the Imperial Army as the game progresses. A specialty of Spencer is his bionic tentacle, which gave the game its name.
censorship
The following renaming and changes have been made in the game:
- Adolf Hitler → Master-D
- General Weizmann → Generalissimo Killt
- Nazis → Badds
- Swastika → eagle symbol
Reasons for riot
The game itself was very controversial for the following reasons:
- Depiction of National Socialist symbols (especially swastikas )
-
Profanity and excessive violence, exercised on the main opponent (Master-D / Adolf Hitler);
- Master-D / Hitler used the filthy abuse “Damn fool!” (“Damn fool!”)
- Master-Ds / Hitler's head exploded after being defeated
- Probably also because of depiction of the Nazis without taking the Holocaust into account
Others
Despite the controversial content, Bionic Commando is a classic and set graphical standards for the time.
