action

Course of action

The game is about a special military unit whose mission it is to find the energy researcher Dr. Finding Kirk. He and 150 employees allegedly died in an accident in his laboratory after the government cut funds for his experiments. In fact, the government only wants to find his invention, the so-called "Third Energy". The team settles on an island, with the member Cooper being eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Rex right at the beginning , unnoticed by the others. There is a large military research facility on the "Ibis Island", where only a few corpses of guards and researchers are found. The special unit consists of the playable protagonist “Regina”, the leader “Gail”, described as dominant and inconsiderate, and the technically gifted “Rick”. Even at the beginning of the action, an arc of tension is built up in which a previous, failed mission is reported. Agent Tom had previously infiltrated the facility as a researcher. In addition to his teammate and Dr. Kirk hardly on other living people, but on hostile dinosaurs, including velociraptors, therizinosaurs and compsognathus. Dr. Kirk desperately wants to finish his experiments and flees deeper into the facility. Since the agents do not have the necessary keys, ID cards, etc., he can escape the player again and again. As the game progresses, more and more of the Third Energy and Kirk will be revealed. At the end the generator of the “third energy” is reached. This must be activated in order to destroy the so-called "Vortex". A side effect that occurred during the last experiment and which now blocks the escape route for the characters. Furthermore, the incident swapped the space in the present with the space 65 million years ago, hence the arrival of the many dinosaurs. Depending on how the player decides at the end of the story, the protagonists either flee without Dr. Kirk, you sacrifice Gail for Kirk or you all flee the island. They also receive a data memory with information on how the “third energy” can be used as a weapon. In the end, the island is destroyed by the “third energy”.

main characters

Regina : Regina is the character that the player takes on. In the game, she is an elite member of a special operations force and a weapons expert. She is described as sporty and, thanks to her quick comprehension, very suitable for secret operations.

Gail : Gail, a seasoned veteran, works with Regina in the game. He is portrayed with ice-cold judgment and a strong will. For him, a mission is like a game of chess - every element - including team members - is a tool that can be manipulated without hesitation.

Rick : Rick has a large number of talents, including handling computers, medical knowledge, and handling heavy equipment and vehicles. He is described as compassionate and puts the needs of his colleagues above his own. This compassion is sometimes an obstacle to success during the game.

Dr. Kirk : Despite his young age, Kirk is an authority on energy research. He was working on a clean form of energy called Third Energy in his laboratory even before the explosion. This egocentric genius is only interested in his research. He doesn't care how this affects society. Kirk is selfish, emotional, and unable to tell right from wrong.

Creatures

Velociraptor : The first opponents in the game and also the most common. Are called "birds of prey" and are physically similar to the Deinonychus . They hunt in groups and can chase the player through several rooms. Later in the game you also meet the somewhat stronger raptors with a bluish color on their backs.

Tyrannosaurus : The game's greatest opponent. You never go up against him directly, but you have to fight for your life four times.

Compsognathus : Small group of hunting scavengers around the enclosure, which are easy to kill individually, but usually occur in larger groups.

Pteranodon : Flying reptiles that dive at the player or lift them up to plunge them to their death.

Therizinosaurus : Large and tough dinosaurs that you encounter towards the end of the game. You always meet them in pairs.

technology

In contrast to the Resident Evil games of that time, Dino Crisis is calculated in real time and has no rigid, pre-rendered backgrounds. The background graphics are therefore less detailed than in Resident Evil . However, the textures do not appear pixilated even with a strong zoom of the camera ; the characters are animated lifelike and show details such as eyes and slight facial features. Despite this richness of detail, the game runs without a drop in the frame rate .

The background music to Dino Crisis is comparable to a futuristic free jazz composition. Background music is only used cautiously in scenes without action and dinosaurs. The player only hears individual sound effects such as B. Steps, buzzing devices, etc. However, if dinosaurs (mostly raptors) appear in the scenario, the music swells to a tense and adrenaline-pumping mixture of free jazz, distorted noises and futuristic sounds. The greater the danger, the louder, faster and more distorted the background music becomes.

Sequels

There were two sequels with the titles Dino Crisis 2 (2000 for PlayStation, 2003 for Windows) and Dino Crisis 3 (2003 for Xbox ). While the plot of the second part directly follows that of the first part, part 3 was moved to the year 2548 and on board an abandoned spaceship, in which members of an intergalactic reaction force have to fight the eponymous dinosaurs. Further titles in the franchise are currently not planned. On September 17, 2002, a third part of the Gun Survivor series appeared, which was marketed as Gun Survivor 3: Dino Crisis . The game is a pure shooter and appeared in Japan as Gun Survivor 3 and in the West as Dino Stalker for the PlayStation 2 .
