The Final Fight games, along with Double Dragon, are among the most famous beat-'em-up games of the 1980s and 1990s.

The first part was developed by Capcom in 1989 for the arcade , later implementations for various game consoles and home computers appeared . The graphics were shown in 2D, which was typical for this type of game at the time, the game sections or levels were mainly moved from left to right or entered with the game figure. In the game you slip into the roles of the street fighter Cody, the ninja guy or the mayor Mike Haggar , either alone or with a friend . The player or players had to free Jessica, the daughter of Mike, who was kidnapped by the dreaded "Mad Gear Gang". Similar to the first Double Dragon games, you could use knives and other objects as weapons in addition to your fists and feet. Originally, Final Fight was developed under the title Street Fighter '89 and was planned as a sequel to the original Street Fighter , but since the gameplay was very different from Street Fighter, the game was renamed Final Fight. Final Fight shares a universe with the Street Fighter series.

Different versions have been published for different countries. In the Super Nintendo version for the USA, elements of the game that were perceived as objectionable were changed, for example Capcom replaced all references to alcohol at Nintendo’s request.

Other parts followed, most of which were distributed for the Super NES ( Final Fight Guy , Final Fight 2 , Final Fight 3 ). The fighters from the first part appeared later in other Capcom games , Guy was eligible as a character in all Street Fighter Alpha parts , Mike Hagger competed as a fighter in the lesser known wrestling game Saturday Night Slam Masters and Cody appeared as a fleeing convict in Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Super Street Fighter IV. Furthermore, the intermediate bosses from Final Fight, Katana (Sodom) and Rolento, can be played in Street Fighter Alpha 2-3. Another character from Final Fight, Andore, who is a normal opponent in Final Fight, can be played in Street Fighter III under the name Hugo.
