Ghosts' n Goblins ( Japanese魔界 村Makaimura , "demon world village ") is an arcade game that was developed in 1985 by Capcom . It was very successful and was used for many home computers, etc. a. implemented for the C64 .

Game description

Ghosts'n Goblins is a game of the genre platform game (game platform). The game is played from left to right, as is typical for the genre.

The player controls the knight Arthur and has to free a princess. He must destroy opponents on the way to her or avoid them and overcome obstacles, mostly in the form of chasms, ladders or platforms, some of which move horizontally, others up and down.

Arthur has five lives at the beginning (six in the Amiga version), he first loses his armor after being touched by opponents or hit by their projectiles, he then stands there in underpants. Only a new hit or contact with the enemy will kill Arthur and take a life from him. Falling into an abyss, if one misses a platform or falls into a lake, is punished by immediate death and here too with the deduction of a life.

opponent

The game begins in a graveyard, where zombies unexpectedly emerge from the ground and run around. Other opponents in the course of the game include bats, harpies , golems , will-o'-the-wisps, crows, flying devils and goblins . The only immobile opponents are cannonball-spitting plants and man-high cannon towers.

At the end of each level, different bosses like giants or dragons have to be defeated.

Some opponents carry sacks with them. As soon as they disappear or are killed, the sack falls to the ground revealing its contents: bonus points or a different weapon than the current one.

weapons

  • lance
  • torch
  • knife
  • Axe
  • Shield with cross coat of arms (or crucifix, depending on the version)

Arthur can only carry one of these five thrown weapons at a time. He receives an infinite supply, so he never stands there unarmed after the weapon has been thrown.

The weapon fizzles as soon as it hits an enemy or an obstacle. This does not apply to the shield: it can hit several opponents in a row and crosses all obstacles.

Levels

  1. The Graveyard and Forest
  2. The Ice Palace
  3. The Caves
  4. The Floating Platforms and Firebridge
  5. Lower Castle
  6. Upper Castle
  7. Astaroth's Throne Room

In the C64 version there are only four levels (first, second, fourth and third level mentioned above).

music

The game was implemented by Elite Systems in 1986 for the C64 . The SID -music by Mark Cooksey was different from the arcade version, and even mystical.

Other versions

  • Arcade: Ghouls 'n Ghosts , Super Ghouls' n Ghosts
  • Consoles: additionally Ultimate Ghosts' n Goblins (PSP) and the Maximo series (PS2) (unofficial successor)
  • The Gargoyle's Quest series is an offshoot of the original series.

A similar game is Belial (ECP, 1989 for the Amiga).

The game was the second most successful of 1985.

In 2006 a new version was released under the name "Ultimate Ghosts' n Goblins" for Sony's PSP .
