Gargoyle's Quest is the first part of a computer game series by the Japanese developer Capcom . The company first released the action-adventure game for the Nintendo Game Boy in May 1990 . The series is an offshoot of Capcom's Ghosts' n Goblins franchise. The protagonist is the Gargoyle Firebrand , a boss from the original series.

Game description

The gameplay is similar to the NES game Zelda II: The Adventure of Link . The action adventure has a number of role play elements. The representation takes place on the one hand in the so-called upper world from a bird's eye view , as well as during the action sequences in a view from the side.

In the action part, the player controls the protagonist through sideways scrolling levels or so-called random battles. In the sequences, the character has the opportunity to hover or fly, to launch a shooting attack and to hook himself onto walls. The player meets a number of opponents and has to avoid traps.

In the upper world, conversations with NPCs continue the background story. In this game environment, reminiscent of a map, the character Firebrand moves to the different levels and is involved in smaller fights at random intervals (random fight). In these, the game character receives money that can be exchanged for information or extra lives . In addition, the character development of the gargoyle takes place on the upper world. In the course of the game, for example, he receives new weapons or the ability to fly is expanded. In addition, the manufacturer integrated some puzzles into the process, which are described as "quite easy to see through" and as "not exactly the most complex or the most imaginative". The action sequences, however, showed an "extremely high level of difficulty".

Backstory

The background story describes the fictional world Ghoul Realm and an invasion by the antagonist King Breager. He tries to conquer that world for the second time; according to the story, the first invasion was repelled by the Gargoyle Red Blaze, known as the savior of the Ghoul Realm . The game intro describes that the main character Firebrand is at the beginning of the second attack on a mission in another dimension and is called back to defend his homeworld. As the game progresses, it turns out that Firebrand and Red Blaze are identical. The final boss in the game is King Breager. After the player defeats that and frees the captive king of the Ghoul Realm, the credits describe that Firebrand has become a legend in the Ghoul Realm. As a reward, the protagonist receives the right to conquer the earth. The Ghosts' n Goblins games depict the earth as a game environment.

criticism

The magazine Power Play describes Gargoyle's Quest as a “fantastic action adventure [...], which is especially convincing in the action sequences.” The fun of the game is “almost as good as the Zelda series”. The Video Games saw Gargoyle's Quest as "significantly more extensive and complex than most mammoth modules for the NES." The "relatively original capabilities [of the player character] leave much room for creative struggles."

successor

In 1992, Capcom released Gargoyle's Quest II for the NES. A Gameboy port of the NES version only appeared in Japan. The third part, Demon's Crest , was released in 1994 for the SNES .
