Rocket Beans TV , or RBTV for short , is a German-language live stream channel of the television and media production company Rocket Beans Entertainment GmbH, based in Hamburg . Rocket Beans TV was created as a YouTube channel parallel to the broadcast of the video game program Game One on MTV . After Game One ended , the project became the company's official broadcaster and from now on broadcasts content on the Internet platforms YouTube, zattoo , Twitch and waipu.tv .

history

The five founders of Rocket Beans Entertainment: Daniel Budiman, Nils Bomhoff, Arno Heinisch, Simon Krätschmer, Etienne Gardé (2015)

The station's founders include Daniel Budiman , Nils Bomhoff , Etienne Gardé and Simon Krätschmer , who all had years of experience in gaming television and had already worked at GIGA Games . On June 14th, 2012 they founded the television and media production company Rocket Beans Entertainment GmbH and their YouTube channel Rocket Beans TV with Managing Director Arno Heinisch . The name Beans consists of the initials of the respective advantages or nickname of the five founding members together: B Audi, E tienne, A rno, N ils and S imon. At that time, the computer game program Game One on the TV channel MTV was the main project of the production company, the Rocket Beans TV project was initially run alongside. The formats were partly shot in the same studios with the same moderators. Unlike Game One , Rocket Beans TV covered a broader range of topics in terms of content; not only computer games and game culture were dealt with, but also entertainment topics such as film, television and technology.

With the pilot film for the series Quelle: Internet , the channel received the German Web Video Award in 2014 in the “FYI” category. The series was commissioned for Tele 5 and should be broadcast on the Internet; In the end, however, it was no longer produced. The video with the pilot episode was then published on June 5, 2013 on YouTube.

At the end of 2014 it became known that Viacom would discontinue the TV program Game One . The last episode ran on December 24, 2014. In an announcement video, the employees of Rocket Beans TV announced their plans to expand their offering from a YouTube channel to an Internet station of the same name with 24-hour airtime. On December 19, 2014, Bohn Jour's pilot episode was the first of the internet broadcaster's formats, the first episode of which gave details on the station's planning and future. Among other things, both live programs and recorded entertainment formats should be broadcast around the clock. On January 15, 2015, Rocket Beans TV began broadcasting. The main moderators were again the former Game One moderators Nils Bomhoff, Simon Krätschmer, Daniel Budiman and Etienne Gardé, who were now supported by a team of over 30 people. The station broadcast its content on the Twitch streaming platform .

There was a great deal of interest in the project, which was relatively unusual in the German-speaking Internet entertainment scene at the time, to initially finance the station primarily through crowdfunding . With the Support Rocket Beans campaign in October 2014 , the company called on viewers to contribute to the project with voluntary donations. The reason for the campaign was that, despite the positive response, the company had insufficient financial resources for further productions and was threatened with closure.

In June 2015, the broadcaster received the German Web Video Award in the “Person of the Year - Male” category for its services over the past year. At peak times, Rocket Beans TV reached around 50,000 simultaneous viewers on Twitch, and around 200,000 people tune into the station every day.

Since August 6th, Rocket Beans TV has been broadcasting parts of the program on regional TV channels in Germany in cooperation with Freaks 4U Gaming and Giga Games founder Helmut Keizer . Under the name GamesNight.tv , the broadcaster and Freaks 4U Gaming show content about games independently of one another on a daily basis.

On September 8, it was announced that the station had received a broadcast license from the Commission to determine concentration in the media sector. In connection with the application for approval, the selection of individual games was restricted by the protection of minors. Since October 2015, a technical adjustment has enabled the broadcaster to be able to show games with USK approval from the age of 18 before 10 p.m. The same applies to the program Kino + , which also shows film trailers for an older audience. Underage viewers receive access to the station only in accordance with the usual requirements of youth media protection.

The awarding of the 6th web video prize on June 4, 2016 was presented by Rocket Beans TV after Christian Ulmen was unable to present the award ceremony due to illness.

Rocket Beans TV briefly interrupted the broadcast on Twitch on September 1, 2016, before resuming it on May 31, 2017.

In March 2019, the station published an overview of the situation in 2018. In the meantime, more than 60 percent of sales come from collaborations with other companies. This also includes events at which spectators are sometimes guests. Around 20 percent come from the viewers themselves. They can take up a paid subscription in the so-called Supporters Club. The number of subscribers increased continuously. The managing director Heinisch emphasized in an interview that the increase in sales led to an increase from almost 30 to around 95 employees.

concept

Both live programs and recorded entertainment formats are offered on the respective streaming platforms 24 hours a day. In addition, the content is published as video-on-demand on YouTube or Twitch; this enables viewers to watch content retrospectively. The programs can also be viewed live on the broadcaster's website as well as retrospectively in the media library and some of them can be downloaded as podcasts .

The program includes game formats in which different types of games are played or news of the game industry is reported. There are also talk formats such as #MoinMoin . Individual formats such as Kino + or Almost Daily were transferred from the YouTube channel to the internet station. In addition, productions by third-party media producers are broadcast here and there.

The station is partly financed through collaborations with other companies. Another part comes from viewers, especially in the early days of the station, who can donate via various platforms.

Another element of the sender is the transparent handling of internal company information and processes. In addition, the viewers are involved in the live formats or otherwise interactively. The participation of the audience takes place primarily online via various social media platforms or Internet projects submitted by viewers.
