A Starcraft e-sports match broadcast on TV

StarCraft is a real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment and published in 1998. That same year, the only official expansion StarCraft: Brood War was released , which continues the story of the base game and includes new game content. In 2000, the game and its expansion were implemented by Mass Media and Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 gaming platform . StarCraft was the top-selling real-time strategy game in August 2007, with sales exceeding 9.5 million .

StarCraft is similar to the previous hit game Warcraft II , which was also developed by Blizzard Entertainment , but differs from its predecessor in many ways. In particular, the game balance of the three very different races is considered exemplary. In South Korea , StarCraft has become a popular sport: there are tournaments of national importance, public viewing with up to 20,000 spectators, training groups, professional players who earn their living with StarCraft , and TV channels that broadcast live games daily.

On April 19, 2017, StarCraft, including the Brood War expansion and some adjustments, was released for free. StarCraft: Remastered was previously announced on March 25, 2017 , which is a revised version of StarCraft and Brood War with a higher screen resolution of 4K / UHD . This was published on August 14, 2017.

Sequels

On December 17, 1998, the year the game itself was released, the StarCraft: Brood War expansion was released . The expansion, which cannot be run alone, contains new units and new game scenarios that pick up where the StarCraft story ended. Today, StarCraft: Brood War is one of the most popular real-time strategy games in the world despite its age and was maintained by Blizzard through patches until the beginning of 2009 .

Since 2002, Blizzard has had " Starcraft: Ghost " developed, an action game for Nintendo GameCube , PlayStation 2 and Xbox that continues the storyline around the Confederation's Ghost units - especially the lone fighter Nova. However, the project was discontinued after several changes of development studio. Between March and November 2016, the three-part DLC campaign "Novas Secret Missions" was released, which implements parts of the original idea for StarCraft II .

StarCraft II , the successor to StarCraft , was announced in South Korea on May 19, 2007 by Blizzard Entertainment . Unlike StarCraft , StarCraft II is a computer game trilogy. The trilogy consists of the three titles Wings of Liberty , Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void . Wings of Liberty was released on July 27, 2010, while Heart of the Swarm was released on March 12, 2013 and Legacy of the Void was released on November 10, 2015.

The plot of Wings of Liberty ties in four years after StarCraft: Brood War , while Heart of the Swarm ties directly to Wings of Liberty and Legacy of the Void ties directly to Heart of the Swarm . Since Wings of Liberty is dedicated to the history of the Terrans, Heart of the Swarm tells the story of the Zerg and Legacy of the Void tells the story of the Protoss.

In 2014, an unofficial version of ARM obtained through reverse engineering became available for Pandora .

Races

Blizzard has based the races in StarCraft very much on the races of the Space Marines, Tyranids and Eldar developed by Games Workshop for the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and some of these have only been adopted with just a few modifications.

  • The Terrans (ger .: Terrans ) are human exiles stranded during their forced journey to a foreign system due to a malfunction ship to different worlds and a new life have built up. With conventional units such as space marines, tanks and space cruisers, they are initially the easiest breed for the player to gain an understanding of the game, also because all buildings and all mechanical units can be repaired. However, it takes a lot of skill and micromanagement to play this breed at a high level. In general, a medium number of units is played.
  • The Protoss are a proud, technologically advanced alien race with strong psi abilities; they are of good disposition and are the archenemies of the zerg. They were created as the first race by the largely unknown Xel'Naga people , as "purity of form". Its name is derived from the Greek πρῶτος 'first' . The Protoss are characterized by expensive but extremely powerful units. The hit points of the Protoss are divided into two areas, shield and life points. Shield points recharge themselves after damage, whereas health points remain permanently reduced (some ground units, such as the Berserker, can be healed by allied Terran medics). The Protoss are generally the preferred breed for beginners, because you play with fewer but stronger units, which are easier to coordinate due to the small number.
  • The zerg were also created in a genetic engineering experiment by the Xel'Naga, but unlike the protoss as "purity of essence", and destroyed their creators. The zerg are actually small worm-like beings who assimilate the genetic code of other species, modify it for their own purposes and thus add it to their own gene pool. Each zerg is subordinate to the swarm and its collective consciousness, the overmind, who in turn forwards its commands via cerebrates (the " commanders " of a zerg brood) and their overlords to each individual zerg warrior and worker. Even the zerg buildings are alive; Most buildings can only be built on top of a living slime ( called a crawler in the game ), which expands around the building to a certain radius. Zerg units are cheaper and faster to build than the units of the other races and are usually outnumbered, but have significantly fewer hit points. Injured units and buildings regenerate on their own, but much more slowly than the shields of Protoss units.

Backstory

StarCraft

The plot of StarCraft is told to the player in the manual, the mission briefing and through dialogues during the missions. In addition, video sequences are shown at key points. The game is divided into three episodes, in each of which the player commands a different race.

In the first segment of the game, the Terran episode, the player takes on the role of magistrate for the remote world of Mar Sara, a colony of the Terran Confederation. Together with Mar Sara's marshal, Jim Raynor, the magistrate tries to regain control of the colony after the Protoss attack on Zerg-infected worlds of the Confederation. After the Terrans arrest Raynor for destroying Confederate property, despite being contaminated by the zerg, the player joins the sons of Korhal and Arcturus Mengsk. Raynor, who is freed by Mengsk's troops, also joins the sons and often accompanies the player on missions. Mengsk uses psi-emitters captured from the Confederation to lure the zerg and advance his own goals. After forcing Confederation General Edmund Duke to support him, Mengsk sacrifices his deputy Sarah Kerrigan - a psychically gifted Ghost agent - to ensure the destruction of the Confederation. To do this, he lures the Zerg to the Confederate capital Tarsonis. Indignant when he realizes Mengsk's ruthless pursuit of power, Raynor flees with a small army made up of Mar Sara's former militia. Mengsk unites the remaining Terrans in the Terran League and sets himself up as emperor.

In the second campaign, the Zerg episode, it is revealed that Kerrigan was not killed by the Zerg, but rather captured and assimilated. The zerg are trying to use their psi powers in their own gene pool. When she wakes up again, she has significantly greater physical and mental powers and a completely changed DNA . Meanwhile, the protoss executor Tassadar discovers that the zerg cerebrates (commanders of a group of zerg) cannot be killed in the conventional way, but can be killed with the powers of the dark templars, who have been cast out as heretics . Tassadar allies itself with a prelate of the Dark Templars named Zeratul, who then defeats the Zerg Cerebrate Zasz, leader of a swarm on their homeworld Char. The death of the cerebrate causes the swarm to run amok and be destroyed by the zerg themselves. However, the mind of Zeratul is briefly connected to the Overmind , the highest collective intelligence of the Zerg. This learns the position of the Protoss homeworld Aiur, a secret that has been hidden from the galaxy for thousands of years. The zerg attack immediately, and despite heavy resistance from the Protoss, the Overmind manages to nestle into the planet's crust.

In the final episode, in which the player acts as Protoss, the Protoss government, the Conclave, brand Tassadar as a traitor and heretic for collaborating with the Dark Templars. The player initially serves as the new executor of the Protoss judiciary Aldaris and defends the planet Aiur from the Zerg invasion. However, on a mission to arrest Tassadar, the player joins the same. Civil war breaks out within the Protoss, turning Tassadar, Zeratul and their allies against the Conclave. The Dark Templars prove their worth when they use their powers to kill two more Zerg Cerebrates on Aiur. The Protoss government then reconciles with them. With the help of Raynor's troops - who have joined Tassadar on Char - the Protoss manage, with great effort, to penetrate the Overmind and destroy its outer shell. Tassadar focuses his own psi powers with those of the Dark Templars through the hull of his command ship, the Gantrithor, and throws himself into the Overmind to sacrifice himself for its destruction, which he succeeds.

StarCraft: Brood War

In the Brood War expansion , the way the plot is presented from StarCraft is retained. Again, the game is divided into three episodes, with the player controlling a different race in each episode.

In the first episode, the Protoss episode, Aldaris, Zeratul and the recently promoted Artanis work to evacuate their devastated home planet via a warp gate to a Dark Templar colony on Shakuras. There they meet the Matriarch of the Dark Templars, Raszagal. The zerg manage to follow the protoss to Shakuras, but Raszagal explains to the survivors that there is a Xel'Naga temple on the planet, the activation of which would banish the zerg from the planet. The player reluctantly allies with Sarah Kerrigan, from whom he learns that a new Overmind is growing on the planet Char. Together with Zeratul and Artanis, the player goes on a search for the crystals Uraj and Khalis, which are needed to activate the temple. When they return, they discover that Aldaris has started an uprising against the Dark Templars. After its crackdown, the captured Aldaris is killed by Kerrigan before he can explain his motives. Kerrigan reveals that her goal is to destroy the zerg cerebrates on Shakuras in order to control the zerg themselves, and leaves the planet. Although they know they are playing into the hands of Kerrigan, Zeratul and Artanis, lacking alternatives, continue with their plan and destroy the zerg on Shakuras.

In the second campaign, the player leads the invasion of the United Earth Directorate , the United Earth Directorate , on the dominion of the Terran League in the Koprulu Sector and learns that the colonies have been under Earth observation since their inception. Vice-Admiral of the Fleet, Alexei Stukov, appoints former Confederate Samir Duran as his advisor. The VED discovers a psi disruptor on the former confederation main world Tarsonis, a device that can be used to prevent communication between the zerg. Although Duran persuades Admiral Gerard DuGalle to destroy the device, Stukov rescues it from Duran at the last moment. The VED goes to the planet Korhal IV, where they defeat the armies of Arcturus Mengsk. However, with the help of the Protoss and Jim Raynors, Mengsk escapes. The VED follows Raynor and Mengsk on the Protoss homeworld of Aiur, but the two manage to escape again when the Zerg intervene. Shaken by Duran's actions and the fact that DuGalle fails to recognize the betrayal, Stukov has the psi disruptor rebuilt. Duran attacks Stukov, and only in his last draws can this convince DuGalle that Duran is the real enemy and an agent of Sarah Kerrigans. Duran tries unsuccessfully to destroy the psi disruptor and escapes. With the help of the Psi-Disruptor, DuGalle and the VED can attack the Zerg homeworld Char and use drugs to gain control over the young, new Overmind.

In the final episode, Sarah Kerrigan tries to smash the VED. To destroy the Psi Disruptor, Kerrigan and Samir Duran form a loose alliance with Jim Raynor, Protoss Praetor Fenix, and Arcturus Mengsk. After the successful operation, Kerrigan attacks the planet Korhal using all possible means and quickly takes control. Kerrigan then attacks her allies, destroys large parts of the Dominion forces and kills both Fenix and Mengsk's right-hand man, Edmund Duke. Kerrigan and Duran go to Shakuras, kidnap Raszagal and force Zeratul to attack the VED on Char and destroy the Overmind. With that, all the zerg are under Kerrigan's control. Zeratul tries to save Raszagal, but with a heavy heart kills her when he realizes that she has long been corrupted and controlled by Kerrigan. When he leaves Char to look for Artanis, Zeratul discovers a genetic factory where Duran is breeding Zerg-Protoss hybrids without the knowledge of Kerrigan. Meanwhile, Kerrigan is attacked by the Dominion, the VED and the Artanis fleet. The zerg defeat all three fleets and prevent VED survivors from reaching Earth. Admiral DuGalle commits suicide while he is still on the run because he does not want to go on living with the guilt of killing Stukov. Kerrigan thus dominates the sector.

Important characters

StarCraft Campaign Editor

The game has its own editor (usually called StarEdit ), which allows you to change existing maps and to create your own scripted map scenarios. The StarCraft community has also designed other functions that allow the game to be modified in many additional aspects. The Microstar company sold a CD with new levels created with the editor, but was forced to stop selling because Blizzard sued them and won the lawsuit.

In the game itself there is the Enslavers bonus campaign , which follows the plot of the Terran Confederation and the Protoss in Episode 2 to show what a self-made campaign for Starcraft could look like. You can also learn some background information about the plot of Starcraft. Blizzard made a conscious decision not to synchronize the characters during the briefings and in the scripted sequences in the game, probably to reinforce the feeling of a fan-based campaign.

Nintendo 64 version

The StarCraft 64 , developed for the Nintendo 64 game console , appeared as NTSC and PAL versions. The PAL version is extremely rare because it was only available in Australia. The game was originally planned for Europe too; there was a packshot of a German PAL version.

Differences to the PC version:

  • 2-player mode: It is possible to play cooperatively and against each other (requires Expansion Pak ).
  • New, exclusive single player missions.
  • Video sequences are heavily scaled down and shortened compared to the PC version in order to fit into the small memory of the N64 module.
  • The expansion "StarCraft: Brood War" (requires Expansion Pak) is included in the game.

References to other films / series / books

While great similarities in the game concept go back to the predecessor Warcraft II, StarCraft has used characters and scenarios from many science fiction works. For example, many characteristic elements of the Terran race from StarCraft are reminiscent of the movie Aliens - The Return of James Cameron . The buildings of the Terrans resemble the installations of the colony "Hadley's Hope" in aliens. The similarity is particularly evident in the cutscene The Amerigo . The Terran Space Marines are also clearly inspired by the Colonial Marines of the feature film. The Marines rifle has a digital ammunition display just like the pulse rifles from aliens. The zerg hydralisks and their infection process are also a reference to the alien xenomorphs.

Not to be forgotten are the elements that are based on the well-known science fiction film Starship Troopers , and the obviously lasting impression that the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000 made on the programmers of StarCraft . The parallels between Terrans and humanity, Zerg and Tyranids, and Protoss and Eldar are clear.

In the four-mission line of the StarCraft demo version or the StarCraft prequel, which tells of previous StarCraft events, the Zerg are also called xenomorphs. The fire eater troops include a hero unit called "Guy Montag," a direct reference to Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 . Tom Kazansky, the hero pilot of the space fighter, takes its name from the character of the same name from the film Top Gun - You fear neither death nor the devil , better known as Iceman. In addition, the multiplayer campaign also features a syndicate under the leadership of Goliath pilot Alan Schezar, whose character is heavily based on the knight Allen Shezar from the anime The Vision of Escaflowne .

Many of the unit responses are also quotations and come from Alien , Apocalypse Now , Arte Johnson, Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In , Contact , Full Metal Jacket , Independence Day , King of the Hill , The Magic School Bus , RoboCop , The Rock , Platoon , The Simpsons , Star Trek , Star Wars and Frankenstein Junior .

The comedian Ken Dodd is quoted with the line “I'm just curious… why am I so good?”, And the sentence “I wanna be all I can be!” Is a slogan of the US Army. References to Guns N 'Roses , Duran Duran and The Doors are used to refer to the music industry, and Richard Wagner's " Valkyries Ride " (possibly also a reference to Apocalypse Now ) is intoned .

There are also references to the manufacturer's older games, Warcraft I & II and Diablo .

Some expressions that are used everywhere among computer gamers today are derived from StarCraft : zergen (attack with many cheap and weak units), shoot in the zerg ( shoot with grenades or automatic weapons at a large group of opponents standing together) and APM (actions pro Minute).

Furthermore, many names of ships and planets are taken from old European myths or literature, such as that of the planet Moria . The names of the different Zerg broods, on the other hand (to be taken from the points screen in campaign mode after each mission) are based on powerful beasts and monsters from various mythologies, for example Garm and Jormungand from the Nordic world of legends, but also Baelrog from JRR Tolkien's Der Lord of the Rings .

Game modes

Single campaign
The player plays his way through the background story with all three races one after the other. The order of the campaigns in the original game is Terran – Zerg – Protoss, in the expansion ( Brood War ) the order is Protoss – Terran – Zerg.
Multiplayer
In multiplayer mode , up to eight players can compete against each other over a network or the Internet ( Battle.net , free service from Blizzard). There are different game modes:
  • Above versus below  : Settings for the teams can be made before the game is started.
  • Melee  : Nobody has an ally at the start of the game, but this can be changed as often as you like during the game.
  • Everything is allowed  : Everyone fights for himself (no teams possible).
  • duel
  • Map settings Use  : In this mode the general rules of StarCraft do not apply, because it is possible to play the maps or missions created by other players with the settings made by them. There are a multitude of such missions, starting with slightly modified "normal" maps up to elaborately created multiplayer missions, which have little to do with the actual game.
  • Capturing the Flag  : After a countdown, a flag will appear somewhere on the map. The aim now is to take this and keep it.
  • Greed  : As everything is allowed , but an economic victory is now also possible by reaching a certain level of resources.
  • Slaughter Festival  : The aim is to destroy a certain number of enemy units. There are no alliances.
  • Sudden Death  : Like close combat , but not all buildings of the opponent, only all main buildings have to be destroyed in order to win.
  • Close combat in a team  : Like close combat , but here a player is controlled by several people from different PCs.
  • Everything is allowed in a team

Leagues and Leagues

Leaderboards

The rankings are mostly referred to in English as ladder . There are two major ranking providers:

  • The “International Cyber Cup” ( ICCup ): Currently the world's largest ladder with over 160,000 registered players. This is played on its own private server. To do this, the game is started with the so-called "ICCup Launcher", a program that offers anti-hack functions as well as other features such as auto-replay-save. The results of the games played are automatically saved and can also be viewed together with various statistics on the ICCup website. Furthermore, your own rating and the associated rank are adjusted, which ranges from A + (best) to D- (worst). The relatively high proportion of Asian players is characteristic.
  • The “World Gaming Tour” ( WGTour ): The WGT, formerly the leading ladder, recently resumed operations after a long period of inactivity. For the new season, the ladder and Blizzard have been integrated into Europe-Battle.net, the official European server, which means that there is no need to switch to another server, as with ICCup. The results are also automatically entered here and can be viewed on the WGT website. The replays are also automatically saved here and uploaded to the website. In contrast to ICCup, mainly European players play here.
  • The WCGZone , which is currently being tested, is relatively new and unknown . Technically, it works similarly to the WGTour in its test operation with an additional program that automates the evidence replay upload and contains anti-hacking functions. In contrast to ICCup and WGTour, it is not a fan project, but commercial. Samsung and the StarCraft manufacturer Blizzard are themselves involved. This ladder got its name WCGZone because the online preliminary rounds for the next World Cyber Games (WCG) will take place through it .
  • The most successful ladder in the past was, besides the WGTour, the PGTour , which had to close after a cracker attack and the loss of all data. The ICCup has a lot in common with the former PGTour (private server, ranking system, anti-hack launcher) and can be understood as an attempt at a successor.

E-sports

StarCraft on Korean TV

Due to the balance between the three races, StarCraft: Brood War is considered a particularly e-sports video game.

In South Korea, StarCraft is extremely popular and sustained, on a par with sports like tennis in Germany. There, two cable TV stations, OGN and MBC , are dedicated exclusively to the transmission of eSports competitions - primarily Broodwar. Competitions from professional leagues run by the broadcasters themselves are broadcast. At the beginning of 2008 , Gretech started its own league as the sponsor and manufacturer of video player software that was popular in South Korea . Unlike the other leagues, the games are streamed over the Internet not only in Korean, but also in English and Japanese. The WCG, the World Cyber Games , are considered a major event in the StarCraft scene worldwide .

National teams

Several nations - but specifically not South Korea - have national teams that often compete against each other in different tournaments, including world championships.

In Germany there is an A and a B team. You can join the B-Team either through an invitation from the team leader or through a high placement in a GerTeam qualification tournament. The top placed in this tournament get the right to challenge a player or a 2on2 team of the team of their choice in order to take their place in the team if they win over the challenged. Players for the A-Team are usually recruited from the B-Team.

The qualifications and challenges in this country are sometimes bigger events than the internationals themselves. Internationally, however, internationals (often referred to as Nationwars) are at the forefront of attention. Results are bet, replays are watched and live streams are followed.

Leagues

Only known, currently running clan leagues are listed below.

designation description
BWCL The BroodWar Clan League is the most successful German clan league . Formerly a largely German league, it has recently seen great growth rates and has also become internationally known. Most of the internationally most successful clans now play here and the BWCL is the largest European league.
GSL The GSL (Global Starcraft League) is played monthly in South Korea and is probably the largest tournament in the world. The tournament is divided into two levels, the lower one, the so-called code A and the code S, the higher level. Winning the code S is considered the highest consecration among Starcraft players, and the prize money is the highest in the world.
WGTCL The WGTour Clan League is a high profile international league hosted by WGTour.
ICCup CL The ICCup Clan League is the counterpart of ICCup to the WGTCL. Although she is still relatively young, all the top international teams are already represented.
Qpad League The Qpad League is a league hosted by the Swedish clan Qpad, which consists only of invited top clans.
GosuGamers Team Tournament The GosuGamers Team Tournament is a large tournament hosted by the international fansite GosuGamers with over 100 registered clans.
PGL The Pro Gaming League is a provider of various leagues, with the focus for Starcraft on Fastmaps.
Vilegaming Vilegaming offers various leagues in which the focus for Starcraft is on fastmaps.
StarcraftDream StarcraftDream is a smaller Fastmaps league.
Starcraft Zone Starcraft Zone is an FMP league created in 2011 as the successor to the VG and SCD leagues that have switched to StarCraft 2.
