Heroes of the Storm ( English for heroes of the storm , often abbreviated as HotS or Heroes ) is a MOBA from the US game developer Blizzard Entertainment . The computer game includes characters from the Warcraft , StarCraft , Diablo , The Lost Vikings and Overwatch universes who fight against each other in a common universe. It runs on Windows 7 or higher and macOS .

Heroes of the Storm is a micropayments- supported free-to-play game and was released on June 2, 2015. Since then, new content patches have been released at regular intervals .

Gameplay

In Heroes of the Storm , each player controls a hero who is selected before the actual game. Two teams of five players each compete against each other. The two teams start on opposite sides of the field near a main building, the so-called base. The playing field itself is divided into two similar halves. The paths that connect the respective halves of the playing field are called lanes. The aim of the game is to destroy the opposing main building.

The following key locations are on the field:

  • Gates that prevent enemy advances from entering
  • Healing wells where you can regenerate health and mana
  • protective watchtowers with unlimited ammunition
  • Detachable observation points that mark important positions
  • Mercenary camps that you can defeat and then let fight on your side.

Both teams each have incessant waves of servants, who have different skills depending on the type of battlefield, to assist. By killing enemy servants (from version 2.49 the servants drop experience balls that have to be collected) and heroes, the destruction of enemy buildings, the subjugation of mercenaries and special battlefield mechanics, the friendly heroes gain experience as they level up leaves. An entire team has the same level, so teamwork is a very important aspect of the game.

If desired, a replay can be created for a game, with which a completed game can be viewed and analyzed retrospectively.

There are no items to buy in Heroes of the Storm . Instead, there are so-called talents in the game, which improve an ability or grant a new ability. When reaching levels 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16 and 20, a player can choose between a minimum of two and a maximum of five talents.

Game modes

More information on the game modes can be found on the website.

Game mode description
Against the AI The player competes with players who have similar playing skills against a program-controlled opposing team. There is no team selection and the battlefield is chosen at random.
Quick search The player competes with players who have a similar playing ability against other players who have a similar playing ability. There is no team selection and the battlefield is chosen at random.
Unrated The player competes with players who have a similar playing ability against other players who have a similar playing ability. A team election is conducted and the battlefield is chosen at random.
Rated In the game mode Scoring, a distinction is made between the hero and team leagues. In the hero league you can compete with your fellow players alone. The ability of a player is shown in the form of his rank, i.e. by his position in leagues (bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond, master, grandmaster) and divisions (1 to 5), with 5 being the worst and 1 being the best division is. At the beginning of each season, the starting placement is determined by 10 placement games. When you play Ranked Games you gain (or lose) Rank Points. If you earn enough ranking points, you get the chance to advance to the next division or league through a promotion game. If you keep losing points, you have the opportunity to defend your rank in a relegation game. A team election is conducted and the battlefield is chosen at random. In the team league, teams composed in advance of 2, 3 or 5 players compete against each other, the rank of which can differ from that of other players up to a league. Otherwise the same conditions apply as in the Hero League.
Heroic chaos Every week the hero chaos brings a new set of battlefields and changed rules of battle.
Own games The player can choose the battlefield himself and invite his friends to play against each other.

Player Levels

Every player has level 1 at the beginning. Each time a game is completed, the player is granted experience based on his or her performance. The experience required increases from level to level. Increasing levels gives the player the opportunity to open loot chests. In addition to cosmetic items, heroes and mounts, loot chests also contain splinters that enable the manufacture of cosmetic items.

Battlefields

The game features a number of battlefields, each marked by an event that sets the strategy of the entire game. Each battlefield has its own set of lanes, bases and mercenary camps. There are 13 different battlefields: Blackheart Bay, the Dragon Gardens, the Ghost Mines, the Cursed Valley, the Garden of Fear, the Temple of Heaven, the Tomb of the Spider Queen, the Battlefield of Eternity, the Shrines of Hell, the Towers of Doom, the end of the line Braxis , the Warhead Manufactory and Hanamura. More detailed descriptions and detailed maps of the battlefields are available on the website.

Blackheart Bay

In Blackheart Bay you can get doubloons from treasure chests, mercenaries and skeletons. These can be handed over to Schwarzherz. If a hero dies, he loses his collected doubloons. After receiving enough doubloons from one team, Blackheart bombs the other team's forts. Blackheart demands more doubloons after each bombing.

Dragon Gardens

In the dragon gardens two shrines become active at regular intervals that can be controlled. If a team controls both of these shrines, a hero on that team can take control of the Dragon Knight. The dragon knight can be controlled by the hero and has new skills.

Ghost mines

Mines open at regular intervals in the ghost mines. In the mines you can kill a limited number of monsters and collect their skulls. When all monsters are dead, a grave golem appears for both teams. The more skulls a team has collected, the stronger their grave golem is. When a grave golem dies, the next grave golem appears again in the other lane at the starting point and now runs over the other lane after the next skull-collecting action. This changes after each skull phase.

Cursed valley

Tributes that can be collected appear at regular intervals in the Cursed Valley. When a team has collected three tributes, the opposing team is given a time-limited curse. The curse can no longer attack forts and weakens servants so that they only have 1 life point.

Garden of Fears

In the Gardens of Fear, the time of day changes into night at regular intervals. At night, weeds come to life in the gardens. If you kill these, they will drop seeds. When a team has 100 seeds, a hero on that team can take control of a garden monster. The garden monster can be controlled by the hero and has new skills.

Temple of Heaven

In the Temple of Heaven, temples are activated at regular intervals. As long as a hero is standing on a temple platform, the temple shoots at the opposing buildings. Over time, guards appear who try to wrest control of the temple from the controlling team.

Burial chamber of the spider queen

Opposing spider servants and heroes leave magical jewels behind in the tomb of the spider queen when they die. These jewels can be given to the spider queen's altars. When a hero dies, he loses his collected jewels. However, these can be collected by your own team members for a limited period of time. After the Spider Queen has received enough jewels from a team, she summons web weavers for that team to attack the opposing defenses. The Spider Queen asks for more jewels after each summoning.

Battlefield of Eternity

The Battlefield of Eternity is a battlefield based on the Diablo universe and part of the first expansion The Eternal Conflict . Two fighting immortals appear on this battlefield at regular intervals: an angel and a demon. Each team is assigned to an immortal and can attack the opposing immortal. If the life points of one of the two immortals drop to 0, the other immortal receives a shield (according to his remaining life points), goes to the lane that is least destroyed and attacks the enemy defenses there.

Hell shrines

The shrines of hell are a battlefield based on the Diablo universe and part of the first expansion The Eternal Conflict . One of three different shrines that are spread across the battlefield appear on this battlefield at regular intervals. These are clickable after a short time and then summon demons that can be attacked by the players. When a team has killed 40 demons, the shrine dissolves and a mortar, arcane or ice punisher is summoned to attack opposing heroes and towers.

Towers of doom

The towers of the disaster are on the World of Warcraft -Event Hallow ajar battlefield. There the gravedigger from the ghost mines and the raven prince of the Cursed Valley face each other. Each base is protected by a shield, cannot be attacked and has 40 life points. There are six different towers on the battlefield that teams can capture by destroying them. Each team starts with 3 towers. Altars appear at regular intervals in different locations that can be conquered so that the controlled towers fire at the opposing citadel with 1 damage point per controlled tower.

End stop Braxis

The end of the line Braxis is the first of two battlefields which was added in the last Starcraft event "Warmachines". There are two signal fields on this map. The goal as a team is to control both signal fields as long as possible. These then lure the so-called Zerg (alien creatures from the Starcraft universe) into the cage of the respective team. The longer the signals are under the control of a team, the more Zerg are then released. As soon as one of the two cages is full, the gates of both cages open and the flood flows onto the battlefield towards the enemy base. Each team then has to support its own zerg and at the same time fend off the opposing wave. The Zerg cause a lot of damage to both buildings and heroes.

Warhead Manufactory

The warhead manufacture is the second of two battlefields that were added in the last Starcraft event "Warmachines". At regular time intervals, small nuclear bombs spawn on the map which can be picked up by the player. Each player can only max. Carry 1 nuclear bomb and lose it when he dies. These bombs can then be placed and fired using the F key and cause very high damage.

Hanamura

Hanamura was published with the all-round adaptation Heroes of the Storm 2.0 and is a battlefield based on the Overwatch universe. There, loads appear on the map at regular intervals that have to be transported to a certain point. Players have to stop at the cargo to move their own cargo or to stop the opposing cargo. When a cargo has been successfully transported, the opposing base loses one life point out of its total of 7 life points.

Volskaya manufacturing

The Volskaya Manufacturing is a battlefield based on the Overwatch universe. Checkpoints are activated there at regular intervals. When you stand on the control point, you capture it and gain control of a Triglav protector, in which two players can sit and opposing players can attack.

Shop

In Heroes of the Storm there is a shop in the game. Heroes, skins, mounts, banners, sprays, announcers, sayings, emojis, portraits and stimpacks can be purchased there. There is also the opportunity to try out every hero and skin. There are also weekly offers in the shop where real money prices of items are reduced as part of a weekly rotation. The offers are valid for seven days and start / end every Monday evening. In the shop, jewels are also available for real money, with which heroes can be purchased. Heroes can also be acquired through gold. Gold is awarded by playing it itself, as well as leveling up and completing quests. Cosmetic items can also be purchased in the shop using splinters from loot chests.

Daily quests

In Heroes of the Storm there are daily quests, for which the player receives gold as a reward. In addition to playing and leveling up, daily quests are the main sources of income from gold. There are four different types:

  • Conducting a game, for example: "Play eight games."
  • Conducting a game in a special universe, for example: "Play two games with a hero from the Diablo universe."
  • Conducting a game with a specific hero role, for example: "Play three games with a hero of the hero role specialist ."
  • Play a winning game, for example: "Win three games."

Plot and heroes

In Heroes of the Storm are characters from the Warcraft - StarCraft - Diablo - The Lost Vikings - and Overwatch universe. These fight for supremacy in the so-called Nexus. In this world the various computer game universes collide. Each hero has different abilities, but all heroes have one passive ability, three basic abilities and can choose one of two heroic abilities. All basic skills are available at the beginning of the game, while the heroic skill is only unlocked at level 10.

Every week there is a randomly selected hero rotation, which makes it possible to play heroes not yet acquired. The hero rotation is valid for seven days and starts / ends every Monday evening.

Hero Levels

In addition to the player levels, there are also the hero levels. At the beginning, the hero level of all heroes is 1. At the end of a game, the hero being played is granted experience (heroes from the free rotation also receive experience). The experience required to reach the next level increases with each level. Level increases grant loot chests. At hero level 5 the player receives the hero portrait, at hero level 15 the elite portrait and the elite mock emote as a reward.

Hero roles

Heroes come in six different roles that perform different functions in a team:

Tanks

Tanks are the backbone of a group of heroes. They have many health points and abilities that can stun opponents. They are great for protecting other heroes in the group by directing attacks or hindering opponents with control effects. They mostly do moderate damage.

Front breaker

Front breakers are the perfect addition to any team. Like assassins, they do good damage and can withstand quite a bit of damage as well. Which is why Frontbrecher are an excellent support for every front and every melee hero.

Ranged Assins

Ranged assassins are designed to deal enormous damage in a short time from a safe distance. They are therefore very suitable for carrying out surprise attacks and killing opposing heroes quickly. However, you need to be careful as they don't have a lot of life points.

Melee Assassins

Melee assassins cause a lot of damage but have the disadvantage that they have to get close to the enemy. In addition, melee assassins have more lives than ranged assassins and are very well suited to reinforce the front of your own team.

healer

Healers can influence the course of the battle with heals, buff effects, or other abilities for the benefit of their allies. Fighting alone is not their forte, which is why they have to fight around a teammate. They usually cause little damage.

supporter

Supporters serve as additional help in the team. They help with shields, but also with the acquisition of experience points. They usually cause little to moderate damage.

Hero skins

A skin ( Engl. For skin ) of a hero describes the appearance of the Hero's in the game itself. In Heroes of the Storm , the player can acquire an additional skin into the shop in order to have a different appearance than the standard skin. Each hero has a different number of skins. The skin can be changed back and forth between games as often as required. The skin must be selected in the hero selection before the game. Since the universes of different games are in Heroes of the Storm , z. For example, a hero of the Diablo universe could wear a skin that was inspired by the Warcraft universe. This makes it possible to develop very many variations of the universes. There are three color variants per skin.

technology

Heroes of the Storm requires a permanent internet connection to run multiplayer mode . In the game modes CO-OP, Quick Search, Hero League and Team League, players are automatically assigned to other players after their skills have been evaluated by the online game platform Battle.net . Each player has a so-called matchmaking rating ( Engl. For matchmaking rating , MMR abbreviated) based on the Elo rating . The MMR ensures that players always compete with and against other players of similar skill.

development

The gameplay of Heroes of the Storm is derived from the popular fan modification Defense of the Ancients ( DotA ), which was originally published for the game Warcraft 3 and is considered the founder of the MOBA genre. In 2009, the game developer Valve secured the collaboration of long-time Dota main developer IceFrog and - surprisingly for Blizzard - registered the DotA trademark rights in August 2010 , followed by the announcement of the development work on Dota 2 as a commercial title on October 13, 2010. Blizzard raised first objection to Valve's application, three days after Valve, Riot Games, developer studio of the MOBA game League of Legends and employer of the former DotA developers Steve Feak and Steve Mescon, also submitted the application for the rights to Defense of the Ancients .

From October 22 to 23, 2010, Blizzard presented the title Blizzard DotA at its in-house exhibition BlizzCon , which was created with the StarCraft II map editor and was described as an experiment that was intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the map editor. The evaluations of the first publicly presented prototype were critical. Gamestar rated the approach as a desperate attempt by the developer studio, after the success of the MOBAs League of Legends or Heroes of Newerth and the announcement of DotA 2 , to also get a market share in the growing MOBA business area. At the BlizzCon from October 21 to 22, 2011, Blizzard presented a revised play version, the rating of which was already more positive.

On May 11, 2012, Blizzard and Valve reached an agreement over the name Dota . Blizzard recognized Valve's rights to use the name commercially, in return retained the rights to use the name in a non-commercial context. Due to the agreement, Blizzard DotA had to be renamed Blizzard All-Stars . On October 17, 2013, it was renamed Heroes of the Storm again . Michael Morhaime officially unveiled the game during the BlizzCon 2013 opening ceremony . During the event from November 8th to 9th, 2013, the title was once again playable for all trade fair visitors.

The closed alpha started on March 14, 2014 and ended on September 29, 2014. A refined alpha started on October 7, 2014 and ended with the start of the closed beta on January 13, 2015. The open beta started on May 20, 2015 and ended with the release of the game on June 2, 2015. From the first presentation to the release of the game, about 55 months passed.

Heroes of the Storm 2.0

Heroes of the Storm 2.0 was released on April 26, 2017 . This update includes a new progression and reward system as well as the introduction of cosmetic items and new options for customizing heroes. As part of the content patch , a new battlefield (Hanamura) and a new hero (Genji) have also been released.

Extensions

The Eternal Conflict

The first expansion, The Eternal Conflict, expanded Heroes of the Storm over several weeks with new Diablo heroes and battlefields. As part of the expansion, four heroes (Johanna, Der Schlächter, Leoric, Kharazim), two new battlefields (Battlefield of Eternity, Hell Shrines) as well as several skins and mounts were released.

War machines

Machines of War is the second, an expansion based on the StarCraft universe. As part of the expansion, two new heroes (Alarak, Zarya) as well as new skins, mounts and two new battlefields (terminus Braxis, warhead manufacture) were released.

Echoes from Alterac

The third expansion, Echoes of Alterac , based on the Warcraft universe , has so far brought a new hero (Yrel) as well as new skins, mounts and a new battlefield (Alteracpass).

Criticism during the development phase

GameStar tested the Alpha of Heroes of the Storm . The computer magazine wrote that "Blizzard could finally do another trick - if they still work on the corners until the game is finished". The game developed a lot of depth in the alpha. Computer Bild also tested the Alpha. The game is definitely already fun, “because the heroes are known; because the game structure is slim; and because the whole thing is entertained in the long run. It's still too early to worry lines, but the rivals are looking very carefully: With Heroes of the Storm they have an extremely charming teammate. "

Mein-mmo.de tested the beta of the game. The combat system is far more dynamic and modern and not as static as with other MOBAs. The hero balance still needs to be fine-tuned, the game is beginner-friendly. Nevertheless, the game has to prove itself first, because players will want to play with their friends and so switch to other MOBAs again. Turn-on.de also tested the beta. Some loading times were a little too long and there would have been annoying jerking occasionally. Also image tested the beta. Shop prices are too high for the newspaper. Nevertheless, it is a cool game with "cute" graphics and easy-to-learn gameplay. Nevertheless, the game is difficult to master. There is no complicated system for bonus items and the mechanics of the cards available are varied. The entry into the game is easy, but it is "damn difficult" to survive against experienced players.

"Great addicting Blizzard quality."

- Felix Schütz : PC Games

Heroes of the Storm impresses with an absolutely well-rounded feel and his intense feeling of triumph in the team. Ease of use plus greater variety - this is Blizzard's answer to the tough chunks in the MOBA business. For novices, Heroes of the Storm is the ideal entry-level title into the business of heroes and lanes, which reveals far more depth than some critics might admit. "

- Andreas Geyer : Computer picture games

" Heroes of the Storm is a flawed, varied MOBA with terrific team fighting and poor objectives."
" Heroes of the Storm is a flawed, varied MOBA with great team fights and bad goals."

- Mitch Dyer : IGN Entertainment

“I would never have thought that of myself: When the boss said that I should write the test for Heroes of the Storm , I was the least interested in MOBAs among all my colleagues in the editorial team. Why me I can definitely say that my disinterest has been healed. What fun am I having in Heroes of the Storm right now ! I love to play Li Li and Tassadar in quick search. Heroes is great for beginners, but the further you advance, the deeper the game becomes. Come all in the Nexus! It's just so fun and so entertaining! "
