Multiplayer Online Battle Arena ( MOBA ), also known as Action Real-Time Strategy ( ARTS ), is a computer game genre and a sub-category of real-time strategy games .

description

At least two teams compete against each other on an arena-like map. There are different versions of a moba with different goals. With some mobas, for example, attempts are made to destroy the enemy base or to eliminate the opposing team. The genre dispenses with typical elements of the real-time strategy genre such as expanding bases and collecting resources; instead, each player has a continuous increase in resources, supplemented by rewards from the course of the game, such as killing opponents. Instead of a large army, each player controls a hero unit that receives experience points for killing enemies. With the help of experience points and resources, the hero unit can be improved in a similar way to computer role-playing games . If a hero is killed, he will reappear in the player's base after a certain cooldown time .

The procedure is made more difficult by a limited number of attack routes (  lanes ), which are also guarded by defensive facilities. At certain time intervals, weaker units appear in the bases, which, controlled by the computer, attack the opposing base on predetermined routes.

Emergence

The genre was founded in 2003 by the free modification Defense of the Ancients ( DotA ) for the real-time strategy game Warcraft 3 . DotA partly took up elements of the official multiplayer map Aeon of Strife from StarCraft . DotA established itself in the multiplayer area and was increasingly used for competitions and esports tournaments. With growing success, the game principle of modification was adopted for commercial projects, for the first time in 2009 in Demigod by Gas Powered Games . This was followed by League of Legends by former DotA developer Steve Feak for Riot Games, who also used the term MOBA as a genre name for the first time, and Heroes of Newerth by S2 Games. The Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment also adopted the game principle with Heroes of the Storm , and DotA main developer IceFrog finally cooperated with Valve for the official sequel Dota 2 . In addition, numerous other projects were created by other providers.

With regard to the genre name, there is controversy, as many DotA players in particular reject the name MOBA, which was introduced by Riot Games.

With Smite (2015, Windows, Mac OS, PlayStation 4 , Xbox One ) and Paragon (2016. Windows, PlayStation 4), MOBA titles for game consoles appeared for the first time .
