Vainglory (English, translated as vain glory ) is a free-to-play computer game of the genre multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) that explicitly for smartphones and tablets has been developed and the operation via touchscreen is designed.

Gameplay

Vainglory gameplay on an iPad

As usual with MOBA games, players fight against each other in two teams on one map. Each player takes over the control of a hero , i.e. a character with a regular attack and special abilities that can be used repeatedly. Each team is supported by computer-controlled, relatively weak figures, the so-called minions , who appear regularly in their own base and move along the main route ( lane ) across the map in the direction of the opposing base. The aim of the game is to destroy the Vain Crystal in the enemy base, for which purpose the enemy defenses along the way must first be switched off.

In contrast to classic MOBAs for the PC platform, such as League of Legends or DotA , Vainglory was specially developed for playing on mobile devices. This is noticeable in several simplifications due to the smaller screens and the tendency for these devices to be less efficient. The teams in Vainglory consist of only three (instead of five) players, the heroes only have three (instead of four) special abilities, and the map is divided into just one lane and one jungle area. Important core elements of the gameplay such as leveling up the heroes by gaining experience, collecting gold, buying items to improve characters, etc. have been retained.

With the update to version 1.16, a new game mode called Battle Royale was introduced. Access to the jungle is blocked so that the entire fight takes place in the lane. In addition, the heroes are assigned randomly and purchases can only be made after the character has died. There is also the Blitz mode, in which a game lasts a maximum of five minutes. In addition, the game mode "Rush" was added to the repertoire of game modes of the game in 2017. Here two teams, each consisting of three players, fight against each other in a maximum of five rounds. The playing field gets smaller and smaller during a round. Furthermore, it is planned to release a "5vs5" mode in the course of 2018.

Heroes

In Vainglory there are currently (as of December 2018) 45 different heroes to choose from, each with different strengths and weaknesses. They are divided into the classes Assassin , Mage , Protector / Support , Sniper and Warrior . Several heroes can be played for free, although this selection changes weekly on Tuesday evening. In addition, heroes and skins can be permanently unlocked through various game currencies or in-app purchases.

Talents

In the game, so-called "talents" are available to the player. These can be divided into the following, increasing in value, levels: rare, epic and legendary. The talents can be acquired through the free in-game currency "Fame" and are used in the game modes "Battle Royal", "Blitz" and "Rush". They serve to improve the skills of the various heroes; To do this, the player chooses one of the talents at the beginning of a round.

reception

Vainglory received mostly positive reviews after it was released for the iOS platform. In particular, the successful implementation for mobile devices was praised.
