Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena developed by Valve and the successor to the popular Defense of the Ancients modification for Warcraft 3 . The game was released on July 9, 2013 in the free-to-play model for Windows . Versions for macOS and Linux followed after a one-week test phase. Dota 2 is available exclusively through Valve's Steam distribution platform . The designer of the game is IceFrog , a long-time co-developer of the predecessor, which only appears under a pseudonym.

In Dota 2 US dollars have been paid more prize money than any other with over 200 million e-sports title. The game is one of the most played titles on the Steam gaming platform .

Game mechanics

In Dota 2 , like its predecessor, Defense of the Ancients , the player controls a hero from a bird's eye view . The player is assigned to one of the factions Dire or Radiant in a group of five players . The aim of the game is to defend the "Ancient", the main building of the respective faction, and to destroy the opposing one. The hero scales in the course of the game by two sizes: gold, which is gained by destroying opposing buildings and killing opposing players or the AI opponents, so-called creeps , and experience (also: Experience (XP) ), which is gained through the death of opposing heroes or Creeps and Roshan or the consumable item "Tome of Knowledge". In addition, each player receives a low regular income in gold. The gold is mainly used for buying more than 100 different items ( items used) while experience leads at certain intervals to level rises, the better the hero values (such as. Health / Mana Points called or armor) and new skills (. Skills ) procured. The maximum level that can be reached is 30. Starting with version 7.00, Dota 2 includes a talent system that enables every hero to learn one of two individual talents at levels 10, 15, 20 and 25 (at level 30, all 8 possible talents). These can, among other things, improve skills and attributes, as well as increase a hero's movement speed.

Each of the (currently) 119 heroes in the game is assigned one of the three main attributes (intelligence, agility and strength). A hero usually has four skills, three of which are normal and one ultimate skill, which he can usually learn at level 6.

The map, which is approximately symmetrical to the center point, is divided into three paths guarded by towers (so-called lanes). Each path has two towers. The paths connect the two Ancients with each other and are run by the opponent's creeps . The Ancients stand in the base of the respective factions, which are strongly secured at the end of each lane by another tower at the entrance to the base. By destroying the close combat or long-range barracks behind it, your own creeps become stronger on this way, which has a considerable advantage. As the very last instance before your own Ancient, there are two more towers that must be destroyed before the actual Ancients can attack.

Valve does not make any fundamental changes to the game mechanics. Compared to the predecessor, the ease of use should be improved. Although Dota 2 is a multiplayer game like its predecessor, a single-player practice mode is also implemented in which the other heroes are controlled by bots .

The appearance of the game surface and that of the heroes can be changed using skins, which can be purchased for real money, among other things. You can also buy tournament tickets that allow you to watch games live. In contrast to some other free-to-play models, Dota 2 does not offer any gaming advantages.

development

Technically, the game is based on a modified version of the Source Engine , which has been developed by Valve since 1999 and was first used in the 2004 first-person shooter Half-Life 2 .

Valve had already secured the naming rights in September 2010, before the game was officially announced. For this, Valve was criticized by Blizzard employee Rob Pardo , who was of the opinion that the name should still be available to the community. Pardo was the chief developer of the real-time strategy game Warcraft III , on which the original Defense of the Ancients is based.

In October 2010, the game was officially announced by Valve, the year 2011 was given as the release date. At Gamescom 2011 in Cologne , a playable version was shown publicly for the first time in connection with the Dota-2 tournament The International . 16 Dota 2 teams competed for the prize money of 1.6 million US dollars . The tournament was broadcast worldwide in 4 different languages. After Gamescom, the release was postponed to 2012.

On June 1, 2012 it was announced that the game would be available for free. Between August 3 and August 11, 2013, the third The International tournament took place in Seattle with a crowdfunded prize pool of 2,874,380 US dollars .

Dota 2 is continuously being developed and improved. This includes the introduction of new game modes, improvements to the game balance and the elimination of game errors.

Version 7.00 was released on December 15, 2016, which brought comparatively large changes. For example, a new HUD, a revision of the map and some heroes as well as the addition of the first hero that was not taken from the previous one.

Legal information about the name

After Valve's trademark registration for DotA became known in August 2010 , the original Dota developers Steve "Guinsoo" Feak and Steve "Pendragon" Mescon applied for name protection for the names Dota-Allstars, DOTA and Defense of the Ancients (August 9, 2010), which was acquired by Blizzard Entertainment in 2011 . Blizzard was very interested in the naming rights, as a DotA successor was also being worked on there. On May 11, 2012, Blizzard and Valve came to an agreement regarding " Dota ". Blizzard accepted Valve's trademark claim, in return retained the right for non-commercial use and thus the ability to advertise Dota . Blizzard's planned in-house development had to be renamed due to the lost rights and was initially named Blizzard All-Stars . It was released on June 2, 2015 as Heroes of the Storm .
