The sponsor has been the game - Association of the German Games Industry , previously the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU). Gamescom took place on the Koelnmesse site for the first time in 2009 . Until 2008, the BIU had organized the Games Convention in Leipzig and then decided to move to Cologne.

The fair consists of a public area for the general public (entertainment area) and a closed part for trade visitors such as dealers and developers (business area).

2009

Trade fair visitors during test matches

The Gamescom 2009 was held from 19th place to 23 August 2009, the first day was reserved to trade visitors and the media. In addition, the GDC Europe developer conference was held during Gamescom from August 17th to 19th . More than 450 exhibitors from 31 countries showed their products on a total of 120,000 m² of exhibition space, including more than 100 new presentations, world and European premieres.

228,000 visitors and 17,000 trade visitors came to the exhibition halls. The previous record of the Games Convention 2008 in Leipzig (203,000 visitors and 14,600 trade visitors) was exceeded, but the record of 547 exhibitors was not reached, with the Leipziger Messe registering exhibitors twice if they had exhibited in both the business and entertainment sectors . According to the Leipzig counting method, Gamescom has 503 exhibitors. The number of premieres was also far below that of 2008.

The event was opened with a concert by the Toten Hosen . Numerous other prominent visitors were expected in the course of the fair, including Joseph D. Kucan , Wladimir Klitschko , Ralf Möller , Tony Hawk , Smudo , Tim Schafer , Stefanie Heinzmann and Germany's Next Topmodels . New developments shown were Borderlands (2K), Heavy Rain (SCEI), The Saboteur (EA) and others.

A small part of the exhibition was devoted to the history and development of computers and computer games. In this section both old computers (such as the Commodore 16 or the Amiga 1200 ) as well as retro games and game consoles were exhibited. Only in the early afternoon did the rush relax and the halls could be reopened for visitors with a pre-order ticket.

The Gamescom 2012 was held from 15 to 19 August 2012 again in Cologne. With almost 275,000 guests, the visitor record of the previous year was reached again, the proportion of trade visitors increased by 14 percent to 24,500.

On August 11, day tickets for Saturday were sold out. The advance sale of season tickets was also discontinued early and replaced by a 3-day ticket, which was supposed to function as a season ticket on days other than Saturday. In the days before the opening, the Koelnmesse online ticket shop was temporarily unavailable due to overload. Tickets for Friday sold out over the course of August 21, and therefore the sale of 3-day tickets was also discontinued. In addition to many new games, the highlights of Gamescom 2013 were, above all, the first presentation of the Xbox One consoles from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony on European soil.

2014

Gamescom 2014 took place from August 13th to 17th, 2014. Already two weeks before the start of the fair, the tickets in the online pre-sale for the visitor days Thursday, Friday and Saturday were sold out.

Various e-sports tournaments were also held at Gamescom . The highlights included:

2015

Gamescom 2015 took place from August 5th to 9th, 2015. All day tickets were sold out a few weeks before the start. Compared to the previous year, the exhibition area has been increased significantly.

The “Best of Gamescom” award went to Star Wars: Battlefront from Electronic Arts.

2016

Gamescom 2016 took place from Wednesday, August 17, 2016 to Sunday, August 21, 2016. The trending topic was virtual reality . On the hardware side, the VR glasses Oculus Rift , HTC Vive and PlayStation VR were testable for the visitors.

As in the previous year, the day tickets were sold out before the start of the fair. Compared to 2015, the number of exhibitors increased by 9 percent to 877. The number of trade visitors was around 30,500.

Due to the increased number of terrorist attacks in the previous months, the security concept was revised: the operators of Koelnmesse asked visitors not to bring rucksacks and bags with them in order to be able to carry out the introduced bag checks as quickly as possible. In addition, cosplayers were prohibited from carrying replicas of weapons.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild from Nintendo received the “Best of Gamescom” award .

2017

In 2017 the fair took place for the first time from Tuesday, August 22nd to Saturday, August 26th, 2017. Gamescom will also take place in the last full week of August in the future. Gamescom was opened for the first time in 2017 by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU).

Super Mario Odyssey from Nintendo received the “Best of Gamescom” award .

2018

The fair took place from August 21st to August 25th in 2018. August 21 was reserved for trade visitors. Gamescom was opened by Digital State Minister Dorothee Bär and North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet .

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice from From Software received the “Best of Gamescom” award .

2019

Gamescom took place in 2019 from August 20th to 24th. August 20th was reserved for trade visitors. Gamescom was opened by Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer . In order to avoid long waiting times for games to be tested, digital queues were used for the first time at some stands this year. The focus this year was on cloud gaming .

For the first time in 2019, the international opening show "gamescom: Opening Night Live" took place on August 19, 2019 at 8 p.m., which was streamed live on Twitch . It was hosted by Geoff Keighley , the Game Awards host . During the two-hour event, trailers and gameplay videos for various video games were presented, including some new announcements.

The “Best of Gamescom” award went to Dreams from Sony Interactive Entertainment.

2020

Gamescom should have taken place from August 25th to 29th in 2020. August 25 would have been reserved for trade visitors. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany , major events were banned until August 31, 2020. This ban led to the trade fair being canceled early, with the organizers opting for a digital replacement and at the same time speaking out against a later alternative date, i.e. a postponement .

In May 2020, Koelnmesse's decision turned out to be questionable, which was explained by the announcement of a special legal status for trade fairs, which from then on were no longer to be regarded as a prohibited major event (see above). As a result, it was even considered to revise the decision to reject it and instead focus on high hygiene standards.

Gamescom in exclusively digital form was criticized because publishers presented little new content, in some cases even completely refrained from participating in the trade fair, and the live streams were an insufficient substitute for the physical trade fair. The opening show "gamescom: Opening Night Live" took place again this year as a live stream, moderated by Geoff Keighley.

Cyberpunk 2077 received the “Best of Gamescom” award from CD Projekt Red. The German streamer and Let's Player Gronkh received the “Best Streamer” award .

2021

Gamescom will take place digitally from Wednesday, August 25th to Friday, August 27th, 2021. Originally, the fair was planned from Wednesday, August 25th to Sunday, August 29th, 2021, on site and online. The opening show "gamescom: Opening Night Live" was again hosted by Geoff Keighley .

Retro gaming

The special show Retro Gaming is an integral part of Gamescom. Several dozen collectors, clubs, hobbyists, developers and artists will be showing the history and culture of gaming on the joint stand. The exhibitors also include pioneers in the game industry such as Factor 5 , Sensible Software , Hewson Consultants , Chris Hülsbeck and Petro Tyschtschenko .

Historical game systems such as Atari 2600 , Commodore 64 or SNES can be tried out on over 200 screens , some with newly developed games. There are showcase shows, arcade machines and picture galleries. Interviews, lectures, quizzes and live music by Chiptunes artists are offered on a small stage .

The retro area has its origins in the previous Games Convention in Leipzig. Over the years it grew into one of the largest booths at Gamescom. It is coordinated by the Haus der Computerpiele traveling museum .

Videodays

The Videodays were an annual meeting of the German YouTube scene and have taken place at the same time as Gamescom since 2010. The event was considered the largest in this category in Europe and had over 10,000 visitors in 2014. The last one-day event took place in 2013 with 9,500 visitors in the Lanxess Arena . The video days also offered interested parties the opportunity to get information about the production and marketing of online videos directly from the YouTubers. In 2014, the event was stretched to two days for the first time. In 2018 the event was canceled due to insufficient ticket sales and a sponsor response. No further video days are planned so far.

RTL controversy

At the end of the 2011 trade fair, the TV broadcaster RTL broadcast a report in which the trade fair visitors were presented clichéd and primarily negative. Allegedly poor body hygiene , sociophobia and a personality that did not correspond to social norms in connection with excessive video and computer game consumption were pointed out. In addition, the trade fair visitors were referred to as “ freaks ”, among other things . The contribution was opened by Nazan Eckes with the words: "Should aliens ever end up with us on earth, they could make really close friendships at the following event." (See also Explosiv - Das Magazin # Critique .) The broadcaster apologized for the contribution a few days later.

The RTL contribution triggered the largest wave of complaints since the Saarland State Media Authority was founded. More than 11,500 complaints were received on www.programmbeschwerde.de . Over 100,000 hits ensured that the portal had temporarily collapsed under the onslaught. When the state media authority Saarland checked the RTL contribution, no violation of media law could be found.
