Tim Schafer (born July 26, 1967 in Sonoma , California ) is an American programmer and developer of adventure games.

Life

After completing his studies at the University of Berkeley in 1989, he got a job at the then well-known development studio LucasArts , where he supported Ron Gilbert as a design assistant in the development of the first two parts of the Monkey Island series. After Gilbert's departure from LucasArts, Schafer took over his position as senior adventure programmer.

The following games Day of the Tentacle , Vollgas and Grim Fandango also received positive reviews (and now enjoy cult status). To Schafer's displeasure, LucasArts turned more and more away from graphic adventures. Therefore, he left the company in January 2000.

In July 2000, he started his own company, Double Fine Productions . The first game created there under his direction was the action adventure Psychonauts , which was published in April 2005. In 2009 he was named one of the 100 best game developers of all time by the game magazine IGN . In the same year, the industry magazine Gamasutra also counted him among the top 20 computer game authors. In the fall of 2009, Double Fine's second game, the heavy metal action adventure Brütal Legend, was released .

Tim Schafer is still in contact with Ron Gilbert today and consults with him about new games. From 2012 to 2014, the two of them developed a crowdfunded graphic adventure called Broken Age together . This was successfully financed in March 2012. The total sum, including premium donors, amounted to around 3.3 million US dollars and thus represented the greatest success that a game project on the Internet platform Kickstarter had achieved to date.

In May 2013, Double Fine started another Kickstarter campaign. This time for a turn-based strategy game called Massive Chalice .
