Brütal Legend is one of Double Fine Productions kreiertes and Electronic Arts publicized action-adventure video game for PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and PC. The console versions were released on October 15, 2009 in Europe and on October 13, 2009 in North America, the PC version on February 26, 2013.

Tim Schafer , the game's creative director , was inspired by his own musical experiences for Brütal Legend . The main character of the game is the roadie Eddie Riggs, voiced by Jack Black , who is transported into a fantasy world that seems to have sprung from the cover of a heavy metal album. In addition to Jack Black, the game features voices from other heavy metal musicians and other celebrities. Lemmy Kilmister , Rob Halford , Ozzy Osbourne , Lita Ford and Tim Curry , among others, were hired and more than a hundred songs of the genre were selected by Tim Schafer and integrated into the game. To promote the game, Jack Black appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards 2009 in Brütal Legend costume and a huge plastic ax.

action

Brütal Legend follows the story of Eddie Riggs (named after Eddie the Head , Iron Maiden's mascot , and Derek Riggs , the artist who designed Eddie). He's the world's best roadie in the world's worst heavy metal band, Kabbage Boy . The game begins during a performance by the band. When the lead guitarist falls from part of the stage Riggs set up and Eddie catches it, a piece of the backdrop falls down and buries Riggs under himself. His blood drips onto his cursed belt buckle, which is actually an amulet of Ormagöden , the "destroyer of the ancient world". Ormagoden awakens, kills the members of Kabbage Boy and transports Eddie to an alternate Nordic world where demons enslave humanity. Eddie learns that this fantasy world was created long ago by ancient titans who left relics and instructions for generations to come. But neither humans nor demons could decipher the meaning. Only Eddie, due to his skills as a roadie, knows how to interpret the clues and use the wisdom of the titans. Although Eddie is seen as "the chosen one" it is not clear whether he is the savior or the destroyer of the world.

Game principle and technology

Jack Black, voice actor and in many ways also role model for game protagonist Eddie Riggs

Brütal Legend is a third-person action adventure game with real-time strategy elements. The player controls the protagonist Eddie Riggs in an open fantasy heavy metal world. There are 23 main missions and 30 optional side missions available. Eddie uses three weapons or tools: a broad ax , his Flying V guitar , which he can use to do magic, and his hot rod . He can find improvements or new skills for these everywhere in the game world or he can buy them from a dealer. All weapons can be combined with each other. For example, Eddie can use the guitar to throw an opponent into the air with fire and then hit him there with an ax. The interaction of the weapons is essential in some fights against bosses in order to win. Eddie cannot use magic endlessly: after a certain time, the guitar heats up and turns red. It can only be used again after it has cooled down. The player can also find metal songs and play them on the hot rod's radio.

During the game, the player meets numerous allies who can carry out individual and special cooperative combat actions with Eddie. Eddie can also control troops and assign them specific tasks, such as ordering a group of headbangers to use their headbanging skills to attack opponents. He can create an army by creating merchandise stalls with a minigame and summoning his minions there. Either Eddie or his colleagues attack the adversary.

Brütal Legend has a team-based multiplayer mode that is comparable to a simplified real-time strategy game with team sizes ranging from "one against one" to "three against three". Each team chooses one of three factions that determine which resources and troops can be summoned and take over the defense of their own territory. The number and types of troops are limited to prevent a team from becoming too powerful. This game mode can also be played by a single player. The computer then takes on the role of the human players.

The game uses the Buddha engine developed by Double Fine itself, named after the working title of Brütal Legend . The engine was designed with a focus on multi- platform development, the work began after Double Fine's previous project Psychonauts had to be adapted to additional platforms at short notice and with considerable effort after a publisher left.

Production notes

As of May 2009, the game was promoted by Black and Tim Schafer with short online videos called Brutal Thoughts with Jack Black . At the Download Festival 2009 in Donington Park, England, Electronic Arts arranged a Guinness World Record attempt for 440 Brütal Legend fans. The record should carry the greatest number of air guitar players that the song Ace of Spades by Motorhead play can be achieved.

Brütal Legend was originally supposed to be distributed by Vivendi Games , but was removed from the portfolio by Activision after Vivendi's merger with Activision . Electronic Arts only later expressed its interest, which was followed by several lawsuits between Activision and Double Fine. But an agreement was reached out of court.

  • At the Comic-Con International in July 2009, the metal bands Gwar , 3 Inches of Blood and Unholy Pink played a promotional concert for the game. Keith Morris, the singer of the Circle Jerks , performed as a DJ .
  • Brütal Legend was the official sponsor of the Mastodon and Dethklok Tour 2009.
  • Tim Schafer appeared on the Late Night Show with Jimmy Fallon on October 2, 2009 to promote the game.
  • Jack Black took effect on 14 October 2009, disguised as Eddie Riggs , on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on.
  • At Wacken Open Air 2009, the largest heavy metal festival in the world, the game was advertised on the three video screens on the main stages.
  • Since November 16, 2009, the German thrash metal band Hatred presented the official Brütal- with the song Mosh Crüe , a version of the title (We are the) Moshcrew from their album Madhouse Symphonies (2008), after a competition held via Myspace . Legend anthem.

Soundtrack

Brütal Legend contains 107 songs from the metal genre by 75 different bands, selected by Tim Schafer and the responsible music director Emily Ridgway. Rather than relying on music labels and bands to provide them with a list of possible songs to choose from, the development team contacted the artists whose songs they wanted in-game to get their in-game permission. In some cases, this process turned out to be difficult because the band had already broken up and every single band member had to be visited.
