Rotting Christ is an in 1987 Athens ( Greece founded) Metal band.

history

The band was founded in 1987 in Athens and released two demos by 1989 , which are not considered official by them, and a split EP with the grind and death metal band Yhorypansi and Sound Pollution respectively. These releases were still strongly based on the popular Grindcore at the time . It was only with the demo Satanas Tedeum , published in 1989, that people turned to Black Metal , influenced by Venom , Possessed , Celtic Frost and Bathory , among others , and used pseudonyms instead of real names; However, according to his own statements, the singer Sakis Tolis is not a Satanist , but sees himself as an atheist with tendencies towards Satanism, who seeks his own way and also deals with older religions. Since the term Black Metal was interchangeable with Death Metal at the time and was not established underground, the band called their music "Abyssic Death Metal". The band played a dark style of metal with keyboards , the use of which was rare at the time and in death metal. The demo made the band instantly known underground and still enjoys an extraordinarily good reputation among friends of this style of play.

The demo was followed by a split with the Italian gothic metal band Monumentum and the EP Passage to Arcturo , on which George “Morbid” Zaharopoulos from Necromantia played for the first time as a keyboardist; on this one can also hear a passage from the ritual band Zero Kama as the end of the song The Forest of N'Gai ; the idea for this came from either him or Jim "Mutilator". Finally, in 1993, the French label Osmose Productions released their debut album Thy Mighty Contract , which is considered to be groundbreaking and made the band known far beyond the country's borders as the first Greek black metal band. Shortly after the album's release the band embarked with Immortal from Norway and Blasphemy from Canada , the fuck-Christian -Tournee who ever considered the first black metal tour.

After disputes with Osmose Productions, the band signed with the Greek underground label and released their second album Non serviam ; Due to lack of promotion, the album was barely noticed, instead rumors surfaced that the band had split up. After the album, Morbid, who was now called Magus Wampyr Daoloth, dropped out due to the stylistic developments. The band ended the collaboration with Unisound, signed a contract with the German label Century Media in 1995 and first released a demo version of Snowing Still with George "Shadow" Florakis, member of morbid band Wampyre ShadowWolf and publisher of the Greek metal Hammer , who created the new style demonstrated by Rotting Christ. In April 1996 her third album Triarchy of the Lost Lovers was released . On this album, the band was far more melodic and processed elements of Gothic Rock for the first time , and the clean production of the album and the references to classic Heavy Metal meant that the band largely said goodbye to their Black Metal roots. In contrast to the first two albums, Triarchy of the Lost Lovers was recorded with real drums. The publication was followed by a tour with Samael and Moonspell , which Sakis Tolis had to complete with session musicians because the other members were unable to attend due to personal problems. The session guitarist Kostas (ex-Corruption) eventually became a permanent member of Rotting Christ. In 1996 Jim "Mutilator", who had played bass up until then and had written lyrics for the band, dropped out due to time constraints; Andreas Lagios became the new bass player.

With the album A Dead Poem , the musicians began to perform under real names again in 1997; The band explains this decision with the fact that he wanted to give the band a new face and the pseudonyms did not fit the new direction. The band replaced their old logo with a more legible Fraktur lettering and the sound moved even further away from Black Metal. A Dead Poem was recorded in Xy's Woodhouse studio by Samael, who also played the keyboard; Fernando Ribeiro from Moonspell was a guest singer. During a performance in Turkey, the Turkish right-wing group Gray Wolves planned to attack the band in a record shop where an autograph session was to take place; the police removed the gray wolves before Rotting Christ arrived.

While the lyrics have focused on the occult since Satana's Te Deum , the band embarked on a more mystical path with the gothic-heavy album Sleep of the Angels in 1999 . The band also experimented with electronic and post-industrial elements, such as on the album Khronos , on which they also covered Current 93s Lucifer over London . The album was partly based on Black Metal. On the successor Genesis the band used their old logo again. On the newer albums, the band increasingly adopted elements of their old style. In 2007 Theogonia appeared on the Season of Mist label , which is about the Greek creation myth and for the first time includes ancient Greek and oriental passages. In 2010 the album Aealo was released , on which Alan Averill ( Primordial ), Magus Wampyr Daoloth and Diamanda Galás were involved as guest musicians.
