The Party.San Metal Open Air is a year in August in Thuringia take-find extreme Metal - Festival . In the first few years, Party.San Tiefengruben e. V. has been organized since then by Party San GmbH based in Weimar . The musical direction is black , thrash , heavy , doom and death metal as well as grindcore . From 1996 to 2010 the festival took place at the Bad Berka glider airfield , south of Erfurt . Due to the difficult underground, the organizer decided to have the festival take place from 2011 on at the Obermehler-Schlotheim airfield in northwest Thuringia, between Mühlhausen and Sondershausen .
history
The festival was held for the first time in 1996. The date originally planned by the organizers in August was, however, prohibited by the state of Thuringia, so that initially only a private celebration was organized. The actual festival took place later on the second weekend in September over two days with eleven bands. In the first few years mainly regional bands appeared. Among others the forerunners of the Thuringian metalcore band Heaven Shall Burn . In 1998, the Apokalyptische Reiter , a genre band that is now mainly nationally known, appeared for the first time , and in 1999, Amon Amarth , an internationally known band for the first time. Between 1997 and 1999 the date for the festival changed between July and the end of August. Since 2000, however, the festival has always taken place on the second weekend in August. While fewer than 1,000 visitors came to the first festivals, the number of spectators rose steadily every year. In recent years the festival has been visited by up to 8,500 fans, in 2006 1,500 of them came from abroad, according to the organizers.
In the years of its existence, the Party.San was often affected by extreme weather events such as storms or heavy rain, for example in 2002, when downpours and thunderstorms occurred, as well as in 2004, when a storm erupted during the festival and rain turned the area into muddy surfaces transformed. Strong wind damaged tents and stage cover. Heavy rain also fell in 2007 and 2010 in some cases before the festival began and turned the area into muddy surfaces. The Party.San 2010 was almost about to be canceled due to the consequences of the weather. The original venue, the Bad Berka glider airfield, only has a grass runway. The consequences for the camping ground after heavy rain were a reason for the relocation of the festival to the Obermehler-Schlotheim airfield, where the Party.San has been taking place since 2011. In Obermehler-Schlotheim, the asphalt runway is largely used as a festival site. This applies above all to the part that is needed for festival logistics. The rest of the festival area including the camping ground is located on a green, shredded concrete base with excellent seepage properties.
In 2018, the festival had to be interrupted for around an hour on Thursday due to a dust storm.
Positioning against political extremism
The Party.San Metal Open Air has been against any political infiltration of the metal scene from the start, which is why, for example, in 2007 the band Taake was unloaded from the Turock club in Essen after the swastika scandal . Metal.de emphasizes the entrance controls as a measure against patches or T-shirts from NSBM bands. Despite these measures, members of the band Watain were seen showing the Hitler salute and wearing T-shirts of the NSBM band Absurd after their performance at the Party.San Metal Open Air 2006. Nevertheless, she played there again in 2010. In 2012, the Finnish black metal band Sargeist was unloaded after their members refused to rebut allegations of the band's right-wing radicalism. The band Carpathian Forest also performed in 2013 , whose singer Roger “Nattefrost” Rasmussen rejects the mixing of “races”, but still does not see himself as a racist.
In the FAQ on the organizer's website, it is pointed out that wearing symbols from NS and NSBM bands as well as playing such music on the festival site leads to immediate exclusion from the festival.
