Atlantean Kodex is a German heavy metal band from Vilseck in Bavaria . The musicians are under contract with Ván Records and have released three studio albums so far.
history
The band was founded in 2005 by Manuel Trummer ( guitar ) and Florian Kreuzer ( bass ). The remaining members Markus Becker ( vocals ), Michael Koch (guitar) and Mario Weiß ( drums ) joined them two years later. In 2007 they released the demo The Pnakotic Demos , followed by the EPs A Prophet in the Forest and The Pnakotic Vinyls two years later. The band performed at prestigious Underground - festivals , so about 2009 at the Keep It True , the Hammer of Doom , the Up the Hammers in Athens , the Dublin Doom Day or the Doom Metal Inquisition in Bradford . Atlantean Codex were signed to the Italian label Cruz del Sur Music . In 2010 the debut album The Golden Bough was released. The title comes from the book The Golden Branch by the Scottish anthropologist James George Frazer , who believed that all religions in Europe developed from the magical thinking of the Stone Age people . He believed magic was the root of religions.
The album was album of the month in Rock Hard magazine , in Heavy or what? Magazine as well as in the Greek Metal Hammer. In the annual polls of the online communities of Sacred Metal and Rock Hard, The Golden Bough won the category "Album of the Year". In 2011 Atlantean Kodex performed at the Rock Hard Festival , in 2012 they were confirmed for the Bang Your Head festival , but had to cancel their appearance. The album The White Goddess was released on October 4, 2013 and again received excellent reviews in the trade press, including the top rating in Rock Hard magazine. In 2014 the band played at the Bang Your Head, Keep It True and Party.San festivals, followed by a renewed appearance at Keep It True three years later.
In May 2019, guitarist Michael Koch left the band for health reasons. The successor was Coralie Baier from the band Antipeewee . On September 13, 2019, the third studio album The Course of Empire was released , which entered the German album charts at number 49.
style
According to Manuel Trummer, Atlantean Codex were founded to create an alternative to modern metal . The cornerstones were old Manowar and Bathory . The band plays epic heavy metal based on Doom , which has been described as a mixture of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus with Manowar, Iced Earth , Bathory or Solstice . Hard rock of the 1970s, such as Uriah Heep or Rainbow , is another influence .
For the texts, Trummer draws inspiration from ancient European mythology , writers such as HP Lovecraft , Robert E. Howard or Carl Amery, and from Bavarian culture. Atlantean Codex are advocates of analogue recording techniques and have expressed themselves accordingly in interviews several times.
