Hammer of Doom

The Hammer of Doom is a music festival that has been taking place in Würzburg since 2009 and focuses on Doom Metal and occasionally related genres such as Epic Metal , Stoner Rock and Psychedelic Rock . Many renowned bands such as Candlemass , My Dying Bride , Pentagram , Saint Vitus , Skepticism , Manilla Road , Sorcerer , While Heaven Wept or Trouble have already performed at the Hammer of Doom.
history
The Hammer of Doom is organized by Oliver Weinsheimer (organizer of the Keep It True Festival), Heiko Krumpholz and Anja Kohlhepp, who, like the Metal Assault, also organize other metal festivals with a special focus in the region. It took place for the first time on January 31, 2009 in the Würzburg youth center "B-Hof", but with the second edition, the company moved to the Posthalle, the traditional venue ever since. While the first six editions took place roughly every six months as a one-day event, from the sixth onwards it takes place once a year in October or November as a two-day event, as it turned out to be difficult to present enough high-quality bands twice a year. In addition to the actual festival, there is a market with numerous stalls in the hall.
The festival offers both newcomers and well-known bands a platform, each band gets at least 45 minutes of playing time. The organizers have always managed to make unusual commitments, for example in 2010 the band Sorcerer , which had been dissolved for 18 years, managed to reunite for a concert in Würzburg, and in 2015 the Finnish band Skepticism played one of their rare live gigs. The band While Heaven Wept recorded their concert in Würzburg and released it in 2010 under the title Triumph: Tragedy: Transcendence - Live at the Hammer of Doom Festival on DVD, CD and LP. Manilla Road played an exclusive 2.5-hour gig, the death-doom band Asphyx performed with a "Doom only" set specially put together for the HOD.
reception
In the Posthalle, the festival annually attracts an audience of between 500 and 1000 from Germany and abroad.
As early as the fourth edition in 2010, Bloodchamber stated that the festival "had already made a name for itself in the scene", in the following year Irish Metal Ireland wrote of "one of the leading heavy / doom metal meetings in Europe" (" one of the premier heavy / doom metal gatherings in Europe "). In 2013, the Münchner tz wrote of a “Festival where ALL the bands convince without exception. [..] an all-round happy event in the eighth edition. Perfectly organized by organizer Oliver Weinsheimer [...] ”. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary event, the Mainpost summed up "The Doom Metal Festival has blossomed, the insider tip has become a Mecca for lovers of this darkest of all heavy metal genres."
