Crippled Black Phoenix (CBP) is a Swedish - British rock band .

history

2004 to 2011: foundation and beginnings

In 2004 Justin Greaves , who had previously played drums in several bands such as Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine , Iron Monkey or Electric Wizard - encouraged by bassist Dominic Aitchison from the group Mogwai - recorded a few musical ideas that he had had been in his head for a long time and with whom he "processed bad experiences". These then formed the basis for the foundation of the musical project Crippled Black Phoenix .

The debut album A Love of Shared Disasters was recorded in 2006 and released in Germany on May 25, 2007. Since then, the band has played with a changing line-up, despite further engagements of the various members outside. The only permanent member, up to and including the album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape in 2012, was the singer Joe Volk.

The box set The Resurectionists & Night Raider was released in Germany on April 29, 2011, with the two albums each being released individually in 2009. The compilation 200 Tons of Bad Luck , with a few songs from both albums, was released at the same time.

On September 10, 2010, the last work under Invada Records , the EP I, Vigilante , was released.

2012 to 2013: (Mankind) The Crafty Ape , exit Joe Volks, multiple change of singers and transfer to Mascot Label Group

The band's fourth studio album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape was released on January 27, 2012. This album was also the first release on the Mascot / Cool Green label after they had separated from Invada Records . (Mankind) The Crafty Ape not only gave the band their first top 50 chart placement in Germany, but it was also largely enthusiastically and highly praised by the German trade press; sometimes the album received the highest ratings. I.a. it was named "Album of the Month" in Eclipsed (February 2012 issue) and Break Out Magazine (March / April 2012 issue) .

After the recordings of their fourth studio album, Joe Volk left the band, whereupon the previously unknown singer Matt Simpkin was hired for the We Shall See Victory tour, which took the band across Europe in March and April . After the tour ended, Crippled Black Phoenix and Simpkin went their separate ways again.

In August 2012 the band announced that John E. Vistic would join the band as the new singer. He can be heard for the first time on the EP No Sadness Or Farewell, which was released on October 19, 2012 .

2013 to 2015: Daniel Änghede and White Light Generator

On March 22, 2013, Crippled Black Phoenix announced on their official Facebook page that John E. Vistic had been replaced by Daniel Änghede as the new singer and additional guitarist. Before that, Daniel Änghede was singer and guitarist with the Swedish duo Hearts of Black Science . The band's statement on their official Facebook page: "Even though he's no longer with us ... John E. Vistic did an amazing job on 'No Sadness Or Farewell' .... Much respect .... Now HOLD ON (Goodbye to all of that ex-singer nonsense) and prepare for the next outburst of vocal damage in the form of Swedish hunk Daniel Anghede !!! "

On the How We Rock tour, surprisingly, keyboardist and singer Miriam Wolf , who accompanied the band on the last three tours and on the EP No Sadness Or Farewell , was replaced by Daisy Chapman . Daisy Chapman was the band's singer and keyboardist even before Miriam Wolf and can be heard on the album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape . So far there have been no statements from the band.

The fifth studio album White Light Generator was released on March 14, 2014 in Germany and on March 17, 2014 in the United Kingdom. It was reviewed as well by various specialist magazines as the previous album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape .

In December 2014 Karl Demata (guitar) and Christian Heilmann (bass) left the band in an argument with Justin Greaves.

On July 4, 2015, Crippled Black Phoenix released the limited EP Oh'Ech-oes in collaboration with Se Delan via Clearview Records , which almost exclusively contained the two Pink Floyd covers Echoes (from the Pink Floyd album Meddle ) and Childhood's End (from the Pink Floyd album Obscured by Clouds ).

2015 to 2017: Bronze and transition to Season of Mist

With regard to the New Dark Age Tour 2015 AD , the band released an EP of the same name with four songs on November 27 on the Season of Mist label , which also includes the Pink Floyd cover Echoes (from the previously released EP Oh'Ech-oes ) contained. Commenting on the EP, Justin Greaves said: "It really feels like we are living in a new dark age. Religious and political oppression, the public that is constantly being fed with falsehoods - it all reminds me of the priests of the Middle Ages, who told the people about dog-headed monsters in the forest - but if you repent and join the church then they would protect you. " The song Spider Island , which can be found on the New Dark Age Tour 2015 AD- EP, was released on October 6, 2015.

Due to Daisy Chapman's pregnancy and her subsequent maternity leave, she has been replaced by singer-songwriter Helen Stanley since the beginning of 2016 in live performances.

After the partly public arguments between Justin Greaves and Karl Demata and the financially unfortunate situation of Greaves, it was not clear for a long time how the band would go on in the future. During this time, Greaves also spoke in interviews about his previously unknown depression. However, Greaves was able to collect enough financial resources via the crowdfunding portal " GoFundMe " to finance the production for the next bronze album . This was released on November 4, 2016 and received similarly good reviews as the previous albums. For example, it was voted the third best album of the month by rock magazine eclipsed (issue No. 186; December / January) and it ranks tenth among the top 100 albums in 2016 in the magazine's annual review (issue No. 187; February).

On July 1st, 2017, CBP released their EP Horrific Honorifics via AMORecordings . The EP consists exclusively of cover versions of songs, of which Greaves either wanted to have recorded "his own version" or with which he shares a certain "emotional connection" and which he "means a lot".

2018 to date: Great Escape

The seventh studio album Great Escape was released on September 14, 2018. This album also received mostly positive reviews. For example, in its issue no.203 in September 2018 , the magazine Eclipsed named the album the second best of the month. And the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung named Great Escape "Album of the Week" in its article on September 28, 2018 . In addition, it was the first album in CBP's discography to hit the German iTunes charts, where it was 75th on the day of publication.

Crippled Black Phoenix like to refer to their music as endtime ballads . Many of the pieces are comparatively long and quite elaborately designed. Their music is often compared to that of the early Pink Floyd. This effort makes it necessary to hire additional musicians for live performances. According to Greaves, the songs are written regardless of their suitability for the stage, which, despite the additional musicians, sometimes makes it necessary not to perform one or the other piece.

The band can best be classified in New Artrock and is mainly assigned to this genre by the magazine Eclipsed . Influences from progressive rock, post-rock, alternative rock and electronic (synth) music are part of the genre. Post-rock shapes the band especially in their early stages. From 2009 more and more elements of art rock and progressive rock were added. Since the album White Light Generator from 2014, CBP have expanded their style with influences from Stoner Doom and Psychedelic Doom. Other styles of rock to be found in the music of CBP are space rock, psychedelic rock and folk rock . The music style names “Stoner Prog” and “Freak Folk” are stored on the band's website and the subgenre names “Macabre Rock” and “Progressive Post Rock” are stored on the website of their label Season of Mist .

Justin Greaves plays the majority of the drum melodies on the albums. He is also the main songwriter. The lyrics to the songs are and were written by other current and former group members; mainly Daniel Änghede and Joe Volk. Daniel Änghede wrote all the lyrics from the album White Light Generator (except for the lyrics of the cover songs ).

Since (Mankind) The Crafty Ape , Belinda Kordic has occasionally been heard as the female second voice. Together with Justin Greaves she forms the British-Swedish music duo Se Delan .

The Australian artist Matthew Dunn has developed almost all of the band's artwork since the album (Mankind) The Crafty Ape .
