Obscured by Clouds is the seventh studio album by the British band Pink Floyd , based on their soundtrack for the French film La Vallée (director: Barbet Schroeder ). Recorded in the Château-d'Hérouville studios near Paris in just two weeks, some songs sound rather rough and spontaneous for Pink Floyd 's standards . The album was released on June 3, 1972 and represented the band's greatest commercial success in the USA up to that time. The song Free Four became a single hit in the USA, the songs Obscured by Clouds and When You're In made it into Live program of the band.

With this album, the band also used synthesizers for the first time ( EMS VCS 3 ).

According to the band, the song Childhood's End is inspired by the novel of the same name by the author Arthur C. Clarke .
