(1968)

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is the debut album by the British band Pink Floyd . The LP was released on August 5, 1967 and reached number 6 on the UK charts .

General

The recordings for the album took place from February to June 1967 in London's Abbey Road Studios . It is the only album that was created entirely under the musical direction of former band member and actual founder of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett . Guitarist David Gilmour only joined the band in 1968.

The lyrics on the album range from childlike, naive tales of scarecrows, dwarfs or a bicycle to futuristic visions of space. This is accompanied by often spherical music, which became the basis for the psychedelic image of the early Pink Floyd.

The songs were partly created in collaboration with the architect and artist Mike Leonard. He asked Pink Floyd to add improvised music live to his art exhibitions , in which he experimented with light objects and light projections . Correspondingly, when Pink Floyd performed later, the songs were often lengthened to create space for extended improvisations.

The title of the album refers to the English children's book classic The Wind in the Willows , published in 1908 by Kenneth Grahame , the seventh chapter of which is entitled “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (“The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”). In it, the water rat and the mole are looking for a stray animal and have a religious experience:

“This is the place of my song-dream, the place the music played to me, whispered the rat, as if in a trance. Here, in this holy place, here if anywhere, surely we shall find Him! "

“This is where I had my song dream, this is the place where I heard the music, the rat whispered as if in a trance . Here, in this holy place, if anywhere, here we will surely find HIM! "

- Kenneth Grahame : The Wind in the Willows

In 2003 the album was voted 347th in Rolling Stone magazine's choice of the 500 best albums of all time .
