" On the Turning Away " is a song by British rock band Pink Floyd that was released on the 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason .

The piece was played frequently on the Pink Floyd World Tour between 1987 and 1989, and the band also performed the song on the tour for The Division Bell album in 1994. On the Turning Away was also played once on David Gilmour's On an Island Tour 2006. Live recordings of the piece can be found on the albums Delicate Sound of Thunder (1988) and Live in Gdansk (2008).

On the Turning Away was released as the second single for the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason in December 1987.

Text and music

The song, a ballad , explores issues of poverty and oppression and laments the tendency of people to turn away from those who suffer from such conditions. The piece ends with the question "Is it only a dream that there'll be no more turning away?" on a particular note, followed by a David Gilmour guitar solo.

Video

The music video for the piece shows footage from the live concert at The Omni in Atlanta , Georgia in November 1987. Directed by Lawrence Jordan , who has also directed concert films by Rush , Mariah Carey and Billy Joel . The footage from this concert was also used for the videos of " The Dogs of War " and " One Slip " from the same album.
