Learning to Fly is the second track on the Pink Floyd album A Momentary Lapse of Reason . The piece was released as the first single in September 1987.

background

The piece was mainly written by David Gilmour , who developed this from a 1986 demo recording by Jon Carin . The noticeable rhythm part at the beginning of the piece was already present on the demo recording and Carin stated that the melody was influenced by Steve Jansen or Yukihiro Takahashi .

The text of the piece describes Gilmour's thoughts on flying, which he also does as a hobby pilot. At the same time, the text is a metaphor for a new beginning or a major change in a life. This also meant the restart of the band Pink Floyd, who continued with the current album without Roger Waters .

The piece was performed regularly on the two tours following Roger Waters' departure from the band. Live recordings were released on the Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse albums.

The video for the song won an award in the Best Concept Video category at the 1988 MTV Video Music Awards .
