The presentation of the MTV Video Music Awards 1988 took place on September 7, 1988. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from May 2, 1987 to April 1, 1988. The award ceremony took place at the Universal Amphitheater , Universal City , California . Arsenio Hall was the moderator . With this, the show said goodbye to the concept of having several moderators, as was still the case in previous years. Arsenio Hall hosted the MTV Video Music Awards for four years.

This year, four new categories were added with Best Heavy Metal Video , Best Rap Video , Best Dance Video and Best Post-Modern Video . Was painted for Best Concept Video . Another innovation was the change in the deadline, which from this year extended to the period from June to June of the respective consecutive year, instead of the previous April to April. To compensate for this, videos from 14 months could be nominated this year.

The winners of the evening were INXS , who won five trophies and topped the nomination list with nine nominations. George Harrison and U2 followed closely behind in the nominations, each with eight nominations.

Compared to last year, the category Best Overall Performance in a Video has been deleted, while Most Experimental Video has been renamed Breakthrough Video .
