The presentation of the MTV Video Music Awards 1986 took place on September 5, 1986. The prize was awarded to videos that premiered from May 2, 1985 to May 1, 1986. The award ceremony took place at the Universal Amphitheater , Universal City , California . The moderation team consisted of Downtown Julie Brown , Mark Goodman , Alan Hunter , Martha Quinn, and Dweezil Zappa .

The winner of the evening was the Norwegian group a-ha which, together with Dire Straits , topped the nomination list with eleven nominations each. A-ha won eight of the eleven awards.
