Like a Virgin is a song by Madonna from 1984 that was previously released as the first single from the album of the same name . The single was number one on the US charts for six weeks.
history
Like a Virgin was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly , who two years later also wrote Cyndi Lauper's hit True Colors , and was released on October 31, 1984. The single was able to place in the charts in numerous countries; in the United States , it held first place for six weeks from December 22, 1984 to January 26, 1985 and sold over a million copies.
Billy Steinberg on Like a Virgin :
"When Madonna recorded the song, you could hear Tom in the fade-out of our demo say" When your heart beats, and you hold me, and you love me ... ". Madonna must have listened to the demo very carefully because her version ends with the same little ad libs . It rarely happens that someone listens to demos so thoroughly; we felt flattered that she stuck to our demo so closely. "
Madonna on her first feelings about the demo recordings of Like a Virgin and Material Girl :
“I liked both because they were not only ironic and provocative, but they didn't look like myself at all. I'm not materially minded and certainly wasn't a virgin. By the way: how can you even be 'like a virgin'? I liked these word games, I found them clever, weird and cool. "
The piece's bassline resembles both Michael Jackson's Billie Jean and that of the four-tops classic I Can't Help Myself . Madonna said that although they weren't cover versions of the two hits, the drum combinations were played according to their model. The Foreigner classic Feels Like the First Time served as inspiration for the text .
At the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards , Madonna sang the song in a wedding dress on a giant cake.
The song was on the list of 500 songs did Shaped Rock and Roll the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was added, and in the list of 100 Greatest Pop Songs of MTV and Rolling Stone. In 2008 Like a Virgin was named to the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs list. In 2003, fans voted Like a Virgin # 5 among Madonna's best songs in a poll .
Among critics was Like a Virgin praised mainly. Critics cite Like a Virgin and Material Girl as the songs that made Madonna a pop icon.

Mary Lambert directed the music video , shot in Venice and New York City .
In 1985 a live video of the tour of the same name was shot in Detroit to promote the Live - The Virgin Tour . This live clip received a nomination for the MTV Video Music Awards .
