This Used to Be My Playground is a pop ballad from the American singer Madonna . It's the theme song for A Class of Their Own , where Madonna starred alongside Tom Hanks , Geena Davis and Rosie O'Donnell .

The song was written and produced by Madonna and Shep Pettibone in 1992 and was the last song recorded during the Erotica recording sessions . It was released as a single on June 16, 1992 and became a number one hit worldwide. Among other things, the single reached number 1 on the American Billboard Hot 100 for one week in August 1992 and became Madonna's tenth number one hit in the United States . This made her, along with Whitney Houston , the number one hit artist in the United States at the time. In the UK , the single reached # 3 in the UK Top 40 and became another top 5 hit for Madonna. The song earned Madonna a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Original Song .
This Used to Be My Playground did not appear on the film's soundtrack album or on any Madonna album. It was originally released on a Barcelona Gold compilation album in the summer of 1992. In 1995 the song appeared on Madonna's ballad album Something to Remember . Madonna never sang This Used to Be My Playground live. The song also did not appear on the greatest hits albums GHV2 (2001) and Celebration (2009).
Music video
The music video was directed by Alek Keshishian and shot in June 1992 at Raleigh Studios Hollywood , California and Malibu Beach . The music video had its world premiere on June 30, 1992 on MTV . It shows a photo album with pictures of Madonna, and with each picture she sings a song. The concept of the video is very similar to Boy George's Video To Be Reborn from 1987. At the end of the video, all the pictures in the photo album are shown again and the album is closed with the final word The End .
