Who's That Girl is the soundtrack to the comedy of the same name , with Madonna and Griffin Dunne in the leading roles.
background
At a first high point in Madonna's career, when almost every one of her releases became a commercial success, this "half Madonna album" was released, which is also listed in official discographies as a full Madonna album, although it contains several pieces by other artists - much like Whitney Houston's involvement in the Bodyguard soundtrack .
The soundtrack to the moderately successful comedy Who's That Girl (1987) became one of the most successful soundtracks of the 1980s because of Madonna's popularity with over 4.6 million albums sold. Like the film, he relies on Madonna's name not only on the cover, but also on the content: After all, four of the nine music titles consisted of her new songs. Of the other performers, Duncan Faures 24 Hours and Turn It Up by Michael Davidson were released as singles. The latter, a production by Stock Aitken Waterman , became a minor hit in the European charts.
The focus of the soundtrack was the four new Madonna titles Who's That Girl , Causing a Commotion , The Look of Love and Can't Stop , the first three of which were successfully released as singles. Above all, the previously published title track Who's That Girl , which with its Latin American influences was strongly reminiscent of Madonna's recently published world hit La Isla Bonita - and was similarly successful in its wake at the top of the international charts. Although it is one of their greatest hits (number one in the UK and the USA) and was even nominated for a Grammy for best film song, it has not been presented live since 1987 and even ignored on the Greatest Hits Compilation The Immaculate Collection . The follow-up single, Causing a Commotion , was also successful in the charts. The video was a current live performance of the sold out Who's That Girl World Tour , on which the third single The Look of Love was played.
