Evita is the soundtrack for the same film adaptation of Webber - musicals Evita in 1996 with Madonna , Jonathan Pryce , and Antonio Banderas .
background
After the musical by the British Andrew Lloyd Webber (with the lyrics by Tim Rice ) had been successfully performed worldwide for 20 years (including in New York and Berlin), after years of searching, an agreement was reached on the pop star Madonna for the lead role in the film after the film company decided against Michelle Pfeiffer and Meryl Streep . Tim Rice's initial skepticism towards Madonna subsided after she had taken one year of intensive singing lessons from the renowned singing teacher Joan Lader and made great progress - after all , the soundtrack was to be recorded live with the 84-piece London Philharmonic Orchestra .
The main role of Che was played by Antonio Banderas , who had not previously sung professionally. He joined the team through Madonna's recommendation. The remaining actors and singers had years of singing experience and sang, like Jimmy Nail and Jonathan Pryce , on stage.
At that time, Madonna's image was problematic: after her sex antics from Erotica and Bedtime Stories , she had to change her image dramatically, because the film was a. funded by Disney . Instead of lacquer and leather, Madonna appeared in old-fashioned tweed and high-necked Versace dresses from 1995 onwards. She prepared the transition from the provocative dominatrix to the Argentine first wife with the successful ballad album " Something to Remember ": Fans and critics accepted this new role: "Evita" was extremely successful in the cinemas in 1996 and is the most successful musical of the 1990s grossing $ 141 million worldwide. Madonna received the Golden Globe for this role and Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice received the Oscar for the best original movie song " You Must Love Me ", which Madonna performed live at the Academy Awards.
The album sold over 7 million copies and is one of the best-selling soundtracks. The single CD (also known as "Selections") was released worldwide as the standard and the double album a short time later. In the US, the double album was standard. The singles, which were limited to the solo pieces by Madonna, were able to place themselves in the charts worldwide: " You Must Love Me ", which was written especially for the film, and above all " Don't Cry For Me Argentina ", the was re-recorded for a dance ceremony, sold over two million copies. There was no commercial release of "Buenos Aires" because Madonna had become a mother for the first time that year and was concentrating on the production of the next album, Ray of Light .
