MDNA is the twelfth studio album by the American singer Madonna . It was released on March 23, 2012 by Interscope Records . It is the first Madonna album that was not released on Warner Bros. Records . The first single, Give Me All Your Luvin ' , was released on February 3, 2012. The second single, Girl Gone Wild , was released on March 23, 2012. The title of the album is ambiguous. On the one hand, MDNA can stand for an abbreviation of "Madonna" and on the other hand allude to the drug MDMA (Ecstasy).

Emergence

Already in December 2010 Madonna announced the work on a new album on her Facebook page. On July 4, 2011, Madonna's manager Guy Oseary confirmed that she had gone to the studio to record. Among others, the rappers M. IA and Nicki Minaj participated .

Singles

The pre-release single Give Me All Your Luvin 'was released on February 3, 2012 and was recorded with rappers Nicki Minaj and MIA. The song was a hit in the charts worldwide, with the exception of the UK. So the song reached the 37th place where Madonna was always very successful before. In the USA, however, the song was able to place in the top 10 and was their 38th top 10 single there. The song reached number one in Canada, Finland, Israel, Venezuela and Hungary. The accompanying video, which was shot by MegaForce, shows the three singers u. a. as a cheerleader. Give Me All Your Luvin 'received mixed reactions from the critics - some praised the catchiness and background music, while others criticized the song as the first single choice and noted that the song did not reflect the album appropriately.

Girl Gone Wild was released as the official second single on March 2nd. The song was only moderately successful in the official charts. As was the case with the first single, the UK charting was weak, with the highest position reaching 73rd. However, the song topped the US Hot Dance Club Play charts, making it their 42nd number one hit on those charts. In addition, the song debuted in the US pop songs charts at number 33. The music video, which was shot by Mert and Marcus, shows the singer in short and skimpy clothes; On Youtube, the video was given an age rating of 18 years. MTV.com's Jocelyn Vena called the video a "perfect homage" to her sex book and 1992 erotica album.

Turn up the Radio was released as the last single, but only as a download single. While critics described the song as an album highlight and praised the production, it also topped the hot dance club play chart, where it became her 43rd number one hit, setting her own record. In South Korea and Japan, the song was already in the charts before the song was officially released as a single. This was due to a high number of downloads. In the Japan Top 100 Charts, the song was placed at number 68. The accompanying video was shot in Florence by Tom Munro.

The song Masterpiece , which also served as the soundtrack for their film WE , was broadcast on radios in the UK to promote the album. There was no official CD release. Even so, Masterpiece reached number one in Russia. In Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, the song also placed, but only achieved lower places. The song gained popularity by winning the Golden Globes in the "Best Original Song" category.

Commercial win

Overall, sales of MDNA fell short of (presumed) expectations, and sold around two million copies. In the US, the album debuted at number one in its first week. It sold 359,000 copies in the first week, so MDNA seemed to be a success. In the second week, however, sales fell to 46,000 copies, a drop of 88 percentage points and also a negative record on the US charts. However, there was a little “trick” in the sale: Those who secured tickets for the previously announced MDNA tour in the first week of sales received a free album. This bonus was waived in the second week, which could be the reason for the crash. Experts also suspected that the failure was related to the lack of a doctorate. However, without the concert ticket bonus, the album also debuted at number one in countries like Australia and the United Kingdom. In Germany, MDNA made it to third place in the first week before falling back to tenth place in the second week. Even so, MDNA is the twelfth best-selling album in 2012, and the album won three awards at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards .

reception

Spiegel Online ran the headline: “Now it's going to be Gaga, Lady!” And alluded to Lady Gaga . Reviewer Jenni Zylka wrote that the pop queen was "running out of ideas".

The PopMatters site, which specializes in pop, wrote “MDNA is quite possibly Madonna's best album in over a decade” (Eng. “MDNA is probably Madonna's best album of the last decade”). Billboard wrote: “A collection of thoroughly pumping pop tunes, some of which are slices of sheer brilliance.” (Eng. “A collection of thoroughly energetic pop sounds, some parts of which are pure brilliance”).

The German edition of Rolling Stone wrote: “Madonna doesn't have to prove anything anymore. But what else does she have to say to us? Nothing different than before. Once again it is about sexual self-determination, materialism (here: cash), remorse and the joys of the dance floor. Sometimes she succeeds in enchanting self- accusatory moments (I Fucked Up) , sometimes wonderfully stupid Euro-Trash (Gang Bang) , sometimes euphoric pop, as you last heard from her in the 1980s ( Turn Up The Radio - hey, good old radio !), and then again it hums and thunders rather indifferently from the pit towers - and in the coming days also from thousands of cars, offices, kitchens. "

Tobias Hinrichs from Plattentests.de gave the album a rating of 6/10, while Welt Online gave it a negative rating and wrote that it was Madonna's embarrassing attempt to be cool.

MDNA tour

The MDNA tour started in Tel Aviv on May 31, 2012 and reached Berlin in June with two sold out concerts. Another concert took place in Cologne in July. In addition to an extensive European stage, the tour also took Madonna to North and South America. The reviews of the opening concert were positive, but the excessive display of violence in the first act of the show was criticized. The tour comprised a total of 88 concerts and it was also the most successful tour of 2012. The revenue amounted to 305 million dollars and 2,212,505 tickets were sold.

At the beginning of September, live recordings of the tour were released in the form of an album as well as a DVD and Blu-Ray under the title MDNA World Tour . The Blu-Ray Edition was heavily criticized by customers because it had image errors. The manufacturer Universal promised improvement.
