Madonna is the title of the same name from Madonna's debut album from 1983. In Europe it was re-released in 1985 as " The First Album " and reissued in 2001 under the original title.
background
The first demo recordings of Everybody , Burning Up and I Know It were made in 1980 with Stephen Bray, two years after Madonna left Detroit to pursue a career in New York. Together they founded the Breakfast Club group. There Madonna not only played the keyboard and drums, but also sang and wrote the first songs. With these demo tapes she introduced herself to Seymour Stein , chairman of the record company Sire Records , and immediately received a contract for two singles.
Everybody and Burning Up became great successes in the clubs - also through Madonna's promotion, which presented her songs in shows and discos in the USA, England and even Japan. The two singles reached number three on the Billboard Hot Dance Music / Club Play charts . After that, the recordings for the first album began in 1982. Eight pieces were used, five of which Madonna co-wrote. At the last minute, Ain't No Big Deal , which was supposed to be the first single, was exchanged for the track Holiday - Mary Wilson ( The Supremes ) had rejected it. The title was published in 1983 and meant Madonna's breakthrough: It was able to place her in the top ten worldwide. The fact that no video was released (it was considered a failure and was never released) made up for Madonna with worldwide appearances on television shows. Holiday is based on the chord progression of the song The Look of Love , with which the British band ABC (band) had a worldwide hit the year before, but transposes it from C major to D major. It is also worth mentioning that the LP contains a different, longer version of Everybody than the CD.
With the last two singles Borderline and Lucky Star , Madonna finally established herself as a pop star in the early 1980s - although she didn't celebrate her breakthrough as a superstar until a year later with Like a Virgin .
The eight tracks on this album are all danceable and only claim to be “fun and prepare a good time”. Madonna returned to this concept several times in her career - most recently to her dance album MDNA (2012).
The album, which was originally supposed to be called Lucky Star , is dedicated to Madonna's father. It sold over 16 million copies and was reissued in 2001 as a remastered version with the original title and cover and two bonus tracks.
In 2006 the album was named one of Capital Gold's All-Time Top 500 on the UK charts.
