The castle Steinebach is the ruin of a lowland castle on the territory of the municipality Steinebach an der Wied in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

The sparse remains of the Niederungsburg in the Westerwald are in the year-round water-bearing river bed of the Wied in the immediate vicinity of the village of Steinebach.

The city of Hachenburg is a good five kilometers north, Herschbach is six kilometers further south-west. The Westerwald lake district with the Dreifelder Weiher is only 2.5 kilometers south of the village of Steinebach.

Surroundings of the castle complex

The most striking fragment of the castle complex is a stone archway, which presumably dates from the 14th century and apparently represented the entrance gate to this low castle. The foundation walls of the other buildings still exist.

The ruins of the castle complex are freely accessible at all times.

history

Steinebach Castle was built in the 12th century as the seat of a local noble family, although this date of foundation is not historically documented.

At least in later years, the small castle complex was owned by the local Knights von Steinebach, who then pledged it to the Counts of Sayn and ultimately sold them.

The very small castle complex has never played a role in history.

Many of Steinebach's residents have the same as their surname and it is also widely used as such in the Westerwaldkreis.
