Reggie Lucas

Reginald Grant "Reggie" Lucas (born February 25, 1953 in New York City , New York - † May 19, 2018 ) was an American musician , songwriter and record producer . Lucas became known as the producer of Madonna's 1983 debut album, as well as working with drummer James Mtume and as a member of the Miles Davis Band in the first half of the 1970s.

Life

Lucas started his career as an R&B guitarist. He played with Billy Paul in the early 1970s and with Miles Davis from 1972 to 1976, heard on albums such as In Concert Get Up with It and Pangea . At Davis he met the drummer Mtume, who later became his production partner. The two toured for several years from 1976 with the singer Roberta Flack . After his time as a fusion guitarist, Lucas focused his work on songwriting and production. Teamed up with James Mtume, he wrote and produced for a number of artists including Stephanie Mills , Phyllis Hyman , Lou Rawls , The Spinners and Roberta Flack . In 1980, Lucas and Mtume won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song for their composition Never Knew Love Like This Before , which was recorded by Stephanie Mills.

In the late 1970s he began writing for himself and producing on his own. In addition to his own instrumental album from 1978, Survival themes , was one of his first projects, the debut album by Madonna , including the song Borderline . Lucas then worked with Rebbie Jackson , Randy Crawford and The Four Tops . He was also a member of the Sunfire group , with whom he released an album in 1982. Lucas also produced her single Young Free and Single .

In 1986 he founded the recording studio Quantum Sound . His clients included the Pet Shop Boys , Jodeci , Jeff Buckley and Sepultura . In the field of jazz he was involved in 59 recording sessions between 1972 and 1980. a. also with Carlos Garnett , Norman Connors , Gary Bartz , Lonnie Liston Smith , Urszula Dudziak (Urszula) , Flora Purim , Masabumi Kikuchi , Zbigniew Seifert , Chris Hinze and John Stubblefield .

Lucas died in May 2018 at the age of 65. He left a daughter.
