GHV2 (Greatest Hits Volume 2) is Madonna's third greatest hits album . As a continuation of The Immaculate Collection (1990) and the ballad collection Something to Remember (1995), it spans the period between 1992 and 2000 with 15 singles .
background
After The Immaculate Collection had become the best-selling greatest hits album by a singer with over 26 million albums sold, a new compilation was supposed to cover the period after that - after all, more than 25 new singles were created, most of which had placed successfully in the charts . However, this was preceded by a dispute between Madonna and Warner Brothers , the parent company of their own record company Maverick: She felt that Warner Bros. had taken advantage of her (she sold Maverick entirely in 2004) and refused to do any promotion for GHV2. It only served (like Remixed & Revisited ) to fulfill their contract. So old pictures had to be used for the cover and booklet - and unlike The Immaculate Collection and Something to Remember , it did not contain any new material.
Overall, this hit collection was received with mixed feelings by fans, as well as criticism: the titles have been shortened in some cases - and one of the greatest hits American Pie was missing entirely because Warner Bros. had put the hit on their last album Music against their will . Titles that were rather unsuccessful in the charts ( Bedtime Story , Drowned World / Substitute For Love ) were included and offensive lyrics (for example in the song "Human Nature") were removed. Above all, the lack of the successful ballads This Used to Be My Playground , Rain , I'll Remember and You'll See was negative - but they were included in the previous ballad collection Something to Remember . Madonna justified the selection by saying that she had chosen the songs that she could listen to five times in a row.
Only for promotional purposes in clubs were some megamixes remixed from older hits and put together a remix album ( GHV2 Remixed: The Best Of 1991-2001 ). A video ( GHV2 Megamix ) served as a promotion - it ran successfully on the music channels. GHV2 sold relatively poorly for a greatest hits album: about 5.5 million copies compared to The Immaculate Collection with 23 million copies sold and 12.5 million copies by Music .
