The Drowned World Tour was the fifth concert tour of the American pop singer Madonna . With the tour she promoted her albums Music 2001 and Ray of Light 1998. During the tour, which took her through two continents between June and September, she played in front of about 730,000 fans in Europe and the USA.
background
After the release of their album "Ray Of Light" in 1998, the "Drowned World Tour" was already planned for 1999, but the tour became due to the shooting of the film The Next Best Thing , the birth of their son Rocco and the work on the music album moved to 2001. While the tour was originally supposed to start in the Kölnarena , Cologne , both concerts there had to be canceled due to technical problems, which resulted in the refund of 35,000 tickets.
success
After the tour ended, $ 76.8 million had been grossed from 47 sold out shows, making the Drowned World Tour the most successful solo artist tour in 2001. The six shows at London's Earls Court Exhibition Center were in record time sold out within six hours. In addition, the ticket exchange received a million calls in the first ten minutes, while around 30 million calls were received by Madonna's ticket hotline. Overall, all shows were sold out within a short period of time.
criticism
The tour received mostly positive reviews overall. Cory Moss from MTV. wrote, "Music turns the world, but costumes and theatrics are more fun. Nobody knows that better than the Material Girl. Michael Hubbard Music OMH commented:" ... She performs with a seductive quality that has beguiled us for two decades and this, combined with her excellent music, results in why Madonna is so special. Sal Quinemani of Slant Magazine wrote that the Drowned World Tour proves that Madonna is still unbeaten in her ability to bring cultural iconography into the mainstream. The Independent's Simon Price wrote that the show was a triumph of hydraulics, bungee rope acrobatics, and innovative choreography, but noted that the setlist was largely made up of newer songs and it seemed to him that it was their attempt to frame yourself in the present rather than the past. Alexis Petridis from The Guardian praised the perfect dance routines and special effects, the touch of arrogance and called the "Drowned World Tour" aptly for one of the most successful women in the world.
show
The show itself contained a total of 5 segments: neo-punk, geisha anime, country western, latin and ghetto / urban. Everyone had their own outfits, and for “Neo Punk” the singer wore a black top, short jeans, zippers and holes in bondage style. On the second song of the show, "Impressive Instant", the dancers wore gas masks. “Geisha Anime” was characterized by more dramatic, slower songs like “Nobody's Perfect”, “Mer Girl” and “Frozen”. She wore a black wig, a black and red komeo and at the opening of the segment (on the song "Frozen") had sleeves that were as wide as the whole stage. To "Sky Fits Heaven" the singer flew across the stage with bungee jumping cords. A silver metal throne was also built for the segment, which was much larger than itself, and on the middle platform of which parts of the segment also took place. "Country Western Latin" contained songs with a guitar and she in a cowboy outfit. The singer also danced flamenco for “Latin”. "Ghetto / Urban" also shaped the finale of the show ("Music"), she wore a T-shirt with the inscription (front) "Mother (back) Fucker". Of the total number of songs played, most were from their latest albums "Ray Of Light" and "Music". Only "Holiday" and "La Isla Bonita" were 80s hits, and the omission of their "Like A Prayer", "I'm Breathless" and "Like A Virgin" times was negatively received by the fans. because "Like A Virgin", "Like A Prayer", "Material Girl" and "Express Yourself" were among the hoped-for fan favorites. Even so, the show received positive reviews from fans.
