The Palau Sant Jordi ( German  "St. George's Palace" ) is a multifunctional arena in the Spanish city ​​of Barcelona , Catalonia .

history

The hall was designed by the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki and opened in 1990. It is located on the grounds of the 1992 Summer Olympics , right next to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys . During the games, the gymnastics competitions as well as the finals in volleyball and handball were held in Palau Sant Jordi .

Other major sporting events were the final of the Tennis Davis Cup 2000 , the final round of the Basketball Euroleague 2002/03 and the 2003 World Swimming Championships . As part of the FIS Snowboarding World Championships 2011 which found big air contest held here as well.

In addition to sporting events, for which the arena has a capacity of 17,000 spectators, the hall also serves as a venue for concerts with up to 20,000 spectators. Eric Clapton performed in the arena during his From the Cradle World Tour in 1994 . Depeche Mode also recorded their live DVD Tour of the Universe: Barcelona in the arena on their "Tour of the Universe" in 2009 .

On January 25, 2013, the final of the 2013 Men's Handball World Championship took place in Palau Sant Jordi , and the 2013 World Swimming Championships from August 31 to 4 .
