The port of Barcelona , ( cat. Port de Barcelona ) is the port and industrial area of the city of Barcelona , the capital of Catalonia , Spain . It is the third largest Spanish port and the ninth largest container port in Europe.
geography
The port area of Barcelona is about three kilometers south of the historic city center and is a pure port and industrial area on the Mediterranean . To the south it is bounded by the mouth of the Riu Llobregat . The almost 20 km² large port area is divided into three main areas. In the far north is the Marina Port Vell for private yachts, to which the Port Franc connects to the south , which is mainly used by commercial passenger shipping , ferries , tour and cruise ships . At the port entrance, the imposing port administration building and the striking steel frame construction of the Moll Barcelona tower dominate . There is also a shipyard area in the east basin. Spatially clearly separated are the piers and docks for cargo handling with their outlying areas and their own port basins in the far south. The port's industrial area of almost 23 km² is adjacent to this to the west.
The two smaller, further north located ports of Barcelona, the Port Olímpic and the one at the mouth of the Besòs serve exclusively for recreational shipping and tourist purposes. They are meaningless for commercial large-scale shipping.
history
Already in the Neolithic and the Copper Age, coastal shipping was practiced in the area. As the evaluations of archaeological finds show, a considerable amount of seafood and sea fish was consumed, meaning that fishing was carried out at least near the coast. The sea level at that time was about five to seven meters lower than it is today and the coastline was two to three kilometers further east.
Coin finds suggest a small Greek colony and extensive trading activities. Around 200 BC The area was dominated by the Carthaginians , who also sailed at sea and probably used the estuaries of the Riu Llobregat and Besòs as landing sites.
Early fortified structures emerged under the Romans in the first century BC (~ 70 BC). The name Barcino appears for the first time under Emperor Augustus . The export of, for example, Garum , Catalan rock and wine to Rome has been handed down . Around 420 the area came under Visigothic influence, the Roman era ended between 460 and 470 AD.
The Llobregat estuary at Montjuïc was mentioned again in writing in 1378 as a secure harbor . However, this port was soon silted up by the load of the river and from 1438 a new port was built further north.
Pen-and-ink drawings from the 15th and 16th centuries show the continuous expansion of the port facilities.
In the 18th century, the port of Barcelona developed into a hub for the global cotton trade .
Since 1931, the Barcelona harbor cable car , which should actually have been in operation for the 1929 World Exhibition, has been running from the port to the 173 m high Montjuïc.
Commerce and infrastructure
Today the port of Barcelona has more than 20 km of quays and berths . There are 35 specialized terminals, three for ferries, seven for international cruises, four container terminals , two for car ferries , one each specifically for tropical fruits , one for cocoa and one for coffee handling , and one for non-ferrous metals . There are also special transshipment points for refrigerated goods and nine terminals designed for liquids and bulk goods . Also LPG can be handled.
The transport quantities are currently being unloaded or bunkered by 45 portal and semi- portal cranes as well as pumps and conveyor belts adapted to the respective requirements . Nine port's tugs the cargo ships make it easier to put on and remove and provide pilotage services . Ships with a draft of up to 16 m can be handled. In the northern, old port area, unloading depths of up to eleven meters are only possible.
In 2013, a total of 42 million tonnes of goods were handled in the port of Barcelona, 1.7 million TEU of which were in containers, as well as around 700,000 motor vehicles . 7727 ships were handled and the number of passengers was over 3.5 million travelers.
traffic
The motorway-like B 10 opens up the entire port area in north-south direction and connects to the toll motorway C-16. The large bascule bridge Porta d'Europa creates the connection to the upstream quays of the Moll Adossat . The port railway leads rolling the RENFE in the southern part of the port facilities partially down to the piers .
The public transport vertaktet the port area towards the center, where every half hour to about ten kilometers southwest to Barcelona-El Prat airport .
tourism
The port is also home to the modern Maremagnum leisure and shopping center, which includes discos, boutiques and cinemas as well as the largest aquarium dedicated to the Mediterranean . The Barcelona Aquarium is a saltwater aquarium that is home to more than 11,000 animals belonging to around 450 different species. The main component is an 80 m long, glazed underwater tunnel with a treadmill that leads under the so-called oceanarium. This includes u. a. Blue sharks, rays and sunfish.
