Poliesportiu Estació del Nord
Poliesportiu Estació del Nord ( Catalan for 'Sportzentrum Nordbahnhof'), in Spanish Polideportivo Estación del Norte , is a sports center in Barcelona . The sports complex is part of the Estació del Nord de Barcelona station building, built in 1856. The complex isvery centrallylocated in the Eixample district , almost in the middle of the urban fabric of Barcelona.
history
Railway operations were stopped in 1972. After years of neglect, renovation work began in 1990 according to plans by the architect Enric Tous (* 1925) with the aim of creating two different usable areas. The regional bus station of Barcelona was created using the old facade and the former railway hall with the track systems behind it was redesigned as a multisport facility. The new sports facility was inaugurated in 1992 and was one of the venues for the Olympic Summer Games . The table tennis competitions were held there at eight game tables, which were surrounded by a mobile grandstand with a capacity for 5500 spectators.
Installations
The sports center is managed by the Unió de Federacions Esportives de Catalunya (UFEC for short). It offers possibilities for various sports such as inline skating , handball and roller hockey , four basketball courts , two indoor handball or indoor soccer fields , two volleyball courts , four tennis courts , two badminton courts and eight table tennis tables. Connected in the adjoining buildings are the fitness area, a swimming pool with a length of 25 meters with several lanes as well as a sauna area and physiotherapy.
