The street Passeig de Gràcia [ pəsεdʒ də ɣɾasiə ] is a boulevard in Barcelona and one of the most famous streets of the Catalan capital.

Location in the city

The 1.5 kilometer long Passeig de Gràcia is located in the Eixample district and connects the Ciutat Vella (old town) in the southeast with the eponymous district of Gràcia in the northwest. It begins at the corner of Plaça de Catalunya / Ronda de Sant Pere on the edge of the old town and ends at Plaça de Joan Carles I at Avinguda Diagonal . In its course, the Passeig de Gràcia crosses other important traffic arteries of the city, such as B. the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes .

The underground line L3 of the Barcelona Metro runs under the street with the stations Plaça de Catalunya (intersection with lines L1, L6 and L7), Passeig de Gràcia (intersection with lines L2 and L4 and connection to the Rodalies and regional train stations Passeig de Gràcia ) and Diagonal (intersection with line L5). There is also heavy bus traffic on the surface.

Buildings on the street

The street is furnished with impressive combinations of benches and lanterns designed by Pere Falqués .

It is lined with a few houses built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Antoni Gaudí , Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Lluís Domènech i Montaner , the most important architects of Modernism (the Catalan variant of Art Nouveau ).

Between the side streets of Carrer del Consell de Cent and Carrer d'Aragó, there is a building ensemble that is colloquially known as the apple of contention (Spanish: Manzana de la Discordia ). These include Casa Lleó Morera , Casa Batlló and Casa Amatller .

Another very well-known building is Gaudí's Casa Milà (nickname: La Pedrera , German: The quarry ).

In the side street Carrer d'Aragó , within sight of Passeig de Gràcia, is the building designed by Domènech i Montaner in 1879, which today houses the Fundació Tàpies , Antoni Tàpies ' art foundation , with its impressive metal sculpture on its roof.

Shops and restaurants

Restaurants (large tapas bars), flagship stores of large fashion companies, jewelers and fine hotels can be found in the south-eastern part of the street .
