Routing

The race started in the city of Mataró about thirty kilometers northeast of Barcelona . The route led over the closed N II motorway to the southwest. First, the route passed the cities of Vilassar de Mar , Premià de Mar , El Masnou and Montgat . The B-500 continued to Badalona and Sant Adrià de Besòs and the C-31 reached the city of Barcelona in the district of Sant Martí . Now the way led to some of the sights of the city such as For example , you will pass the Sagrada Família basilica , the boulevard Passeig de Gracia and the promenade La Rambla . The last few kilometers were uphill to the Olympic Stadium on Montjuïc . The difference in altitude was about 150 meters. In the stadium, the goal was after one lap on the running track.

Race course

Date: August 9, 1992 , 6:30 p.m. local time ( CEST )

Conditions: sunny / approx. 27 ° C

The race had no real favorites, even if the Italian Olympic champion Gelindo Bordin was there. He was no longer in the great shape of his peak years from 1986 to 1990. At the World Championships last year he was "only" able to take eighth place. So it was an open race here in Barcelona .

The runners started slowly, the field of participants stayed close for a long time. After the fifteenth kilometer, however, it got faster. At twenty kilometers there were still around thirty runners in the lead. Bordin had to give up the race due to a groin injury. Now the field stretched a little. After thirty kilometers a top group of five had formed. The Koreans Hwang Young-cho and Kim Wan-ki and the Japanese Kōichi Morishita and Takeyuki Nakayama and the German Stephan Freilang had been able to break away. After Kim could no longer follow the pace, Hwang and Morishita moved forward. Freilang was initially able to follow, but had to be demolished after a short time and a little later he ran the last piece to the stadium together with Nakayama. Shortly before reaching the stadium, Hwang Young-cho got rid of his last pursuer after a hard and fierce argument. He was the first to get to the Olympic Stadium and jubilantly ran the last lap to victory. 22 seconds later, Kōichi Morishita crossed the finish line and won silver. A battle for the bronze medal broke out between Freilang and Nakayama. The two had reached the stadium tied. On the final lap, Stephan Freilang released the larger reserves and reached the finish just two seconds ahead of Takeyuki Nakayama. Only thirteen seconds later, the Italian Salvatore Bettiol crossed the finish line in fifth, ten seconds behind the Moroccan Salah Qoqaiche was sixth in the Olympics. The further gaps were also close.

The men's marathon was the final medal decision of these Olympic Games. Immediately afterwards, the closing ceremony began at 9:15 p.m. The runners who took more than 2:45 hours were diverted. Your target was on the warm-up facility outside the Olympic Stadium.

Hwang Young-cho was the first Olympic marathon champion for South Korea. His compatriot son Kee-chung , winner of 1936 under the imposed name Son Kitei, had to compete for Japan.
