Routing
The start and finish of the marathon was on The Mall , within sight of Buckingham Palace . First it went northeast to Trafalgar Square , then right to the banks of the Thames . There it went further to the right towards the south along the embankment. At the London landmark Big Ben , the course turned right again in a westerly direction. We continued along St. James' Park and at its end in an arc to the north. The route at the Victoria Memorial led back onto The Mall .
The path now ran to the Thames, this time to the left to the north, where the route ended in a circular course of around twelve kilometers that had to be completed three times. The path followed the north bank of the Thames to Blackfriars Bridge and then turned left into the city center. The St Paul's Cathedral was passed, then the Museum of London . Then the path turned east and followed a winding route. It went past the Mansion House , the Bank of England and Leadenhall Market to the Tower of London . Here the course turned towards the banks of the Thames. It went back to Big Ben , along St. James' Park to the Victoria Memorial and then to the start and finish point. After two more laps, the race finally ended on The Mall .
Overall, the athletes had to cope with a difference in altitude of around sixteen meters. The start and finish were at a height of five meters, the deepest point at around 1.5 meters on the banks of the Thames. The highest point of 17.7 meters was reached at St Paul's Cathedral .
Race course
August 12, 2012, 11 a.m.
The race was not overly fast from the start, but at no time was there a slow pace. Even before the 10 km mark, the Brazilian Franck de Almeida was the first runner to leave the field for a few seconds. However, he was soon recovered. A little later, the Kenyan Wilson Kipsang made another attempt to break away. Kipsang now set a very high pace and ran the three fastest 5 km sections of the entire race with 14:20, 14:59 and 15:01 minutes. An eight-man chase group was formed. Kipsang worked out a lead of up to fifteen seconds, but his opponents could not be shaken off decisively. At thirty kilometers his compatriot Abel Kirui and Stephen Kiprotich from Uganda caught up with Kipsang. The Ethiopian Ayele Abshero followed directly behind them, but he could not reach and soon fell behind. At 35 kilometers, the three front-runners led by more than a minute over Brazilian Marílson dos Santos. Another minute back followed the Japanese Kentaro Nakamoto and the American Meb Keflezighi.
Kiprotich attacked after 37 kilometers and passed the two Kenyans. Kirui was nineteen seconds behind at forty kilometers, Kipsang another 32 seconds behind. Stephen Kiprotich eventually won the race, finishing 26 seconds ahead of Abel Kirui. Third was Wilson Kipsang, 1:36 minutes behind Stephen Kiprotich. Meb Keflezighi passed Marílson dos Santos on the last few kilometers. Keflezighi's gap to the bronze medalist was 1:29 minutes, and he was four seconds ahead of dos Santos. The Japanese Kentarō Nakamoto finished six seconds behind dos Santos in sixth place.
Stephen Kiprotich is Uganda's first Olympic and medalist in marathon running . It was Uganda's second ever Olympic victory in Olympic history since 1972 when John Akii-Bua won the 400-meter hurdles in Munich .
Guor Marial , who competes as an independent Olympian , comes from South Sudan .
