Course of competition
August 2012 , 9 a.m.
In the following description, the three Russian walkers who were disqualified for doping reasons and who played an important role in leadership and persecution groups are not taken into account from the outset.
The Slovak Matej Tóth took the lead in the early stages, but was soon overtaken and overtaken by a group of ten, mostly led by the French Yohann Diniz and the Chinese Si Tianfeng. At twenty kilometers there were still seven walkers in the group, 49 seconds behind them the Irishman Robert Heffernan tried to catch up.
Halfway through the race the silver medalist of the leading 20-km walking Erick Barrondo five seconds before the Australians Nathan Deakes and Frenchman Yohann Diniz. Deake's compatriot Jared Tallent, seventh on the 20 km distance, was three more seconds back. Behind them were Si Tianfeng from China and another Australian with Luke Adams. The two were about twenty seconds behind the leader. But the distances changed again, it got even closer. Si, Diniz. Deakes, Barrondo and Tallent were only twenty seconds apart, followed by Heffernan and Li Jianbo, another Chinese, with just over a minute. At 35 km Si picked up the pace and was able to break away from his competitors. Tallent kept the gap within limits and later tried to catch up again, Deakes fell further back, Barrondo gave up the competition. Even at forty kilometers, no decision had yet been made. Si was fifteen seconds ahead of Tallent, Li 45 seconds back, Diniz and Heffernan just two more seconds behind.
Diniz walked along the street just a short distance from the barriers while the other athletes moved down the middle of the street. In fact, the Frenchman fell after a collision with a grid, but was able to get up and continue the competition. Tallent continued to catch up with Si and passed the Chinese with five kilometers to go. The Australian pulled away on the last kilometers and reached the goal with a new Olympic record . 38 seconds behind him, Si secured the silver medal. Heffernan crossed the finish line in third, 1:01 minutes behind the winner. In his time he set a new Irish national record. Li finished fourth and also undercut the 3:40 h mark. Tóth, who was leading at the beginning and who had divided the competition very well, came in fifth. The Pole Łukasz Nowak finished sixth in front of the Japanese Koichiro Morioka and the German walker André Höhne.
