Wajima ( Japanese 輪 島 市 , - shi ) is a city in the Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa on the Noto Peninsula .

The small town is known nationwide for its lacquer work, called Wajima-nuri and therefore also bears the title Urushi no Sato , the hometown of lacquer.

The region used to be ideal for lacquer production, as the lacquer tree was very common. Nowadays, however, the raw paint mostly comes to Wajima from China .

Wajima is north of Kanazawa on the Noto Peninsula on the Sea of ​​Japan . In addition, the island of Hegura-jima and the uninhabited island group of Nanatsujima , several kilometers north of the Noto Peninsula, belong to the municipality .
