geology

The islands are of volcanic origin and mostly consist of andesite , sometimes also of tuff breccias .

Flora and fauna

The vegetation of all islands except the rock couple Yawazu-jima, is from 20 m of grasses such as miscanthus , Angelica japonica , with Japanese knotweed , Cirsium japonicum and Rosa multiflora . Like the island of Hegura-jima , 25 km to the north, the islands serve as resting places for migratory birds . In addition, the Japanese cormorant , reef free heron , peregrine falcon , Japanese gull , white wagtail ( lugens group), blue roe and thick-billed crows live here all year round. Due to this, it became part of the Noto-hantō-quasi-national park in 1968 and on November 1, 1973 an area of 24 hectares became a bird sanctuary ( 国 指定 七 ツ 島 鳥 獣 保護 区 , Kokushitei Nanatsujima chōjū hogoku ), which was due to its occurrence of the endangered Japanese alkali is also an Important Bird Area (A1). Threats to the birds are on Ōshima wild rabbits , which have increased from four to 250 specimens released in 1984 to the present day, as well as on Aramiko-jima brown rats .

history

In 1594, Ama divers and fishermen from Kanezaki (now part of Munakata ), more than 700 km away, settled on the Noto Peninsula in what is now Wajima and received exclusive fishing rights for Hegura-jima and Nanatsujima. They lived on the islands over the summer, in particular Ōshima, Aramiko-jima and Mikuriya-jima. This ceased in the 1970s with the designation as a bird sanctuary, so that today the only human trace is the uninhabited lighthouse on Ōshima.
