In July 2013, the IAAF confirmed a lifelong ban, which was subsequently imposed by the disciplinary commission of the Belarusian anti-doping agency.

qualification

August 3, 2012, 10:00 a.m.

The qualification was carried out in two groups. The qualification distance was 20.65 m. Since only five athletes exceeded this distance (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best athletes from both groups to a total of twelve athletes (highlighted in light green). So finally 20.25 m was enough for the final.

final

Award ceremony:
left David Storl (silver), center Tomasz Majewski (gold), right Reese Hoffa (bronze)

August 3, 2012, 8:30 p.m.

Twelve athletes had qualified for the final, five of them by qualifying distance and seven more by placing in the top twelve. Three Americans fought for the medals together with one participant each from Argentina, Germany, Jamaica, Canada, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Taiwan and Belarus.

The favorites were the Polish Olympic champion from 2008 Tomasz Majewski, the German world and European champion David Storl and the world number one from 2012 Dylan Armstrong from Canada. The three US athletes, Christian Cantwell, Reese Hoffa and Ryan Whiting, were also rated highly.

In the first lap Storl took the lead with 21.84 m, followed by Majewski with 21.19 m and Hoffa with 20.98 m. Storl was able to improve by a further two centimeters in the second attempt, Majewski overtook Hoffa with 21.72 m, who in turn increased to 21.23 m in the third attempt. In the next round, Majewski took the lead with 21.87 from Storl. Thus Majewski led ahead of Storl, Hoffa, Cantwell, Armstrong and Germán Lauro, who was able to improve the Argentine national record three times in this competition. Whiting was eliminated in ninth place after three attempts.

Hoffa and Storl had failed attempts in the last round. Majewski hit the ball to 21.89 m and was able to repeat his Olympic victory in Beijing. After the Americans Ralph Rose ( 1904 and 1908 ) and Parry O'Brien ( 1952 and 1956 ) Majewski is only the third shot putter to win two gold medals in consecutive games. Cantwell had improved to 21.19 m, but remained in fourth place ahead of Armstrong and Lauro.
