All three US athletes had qualified for the final. There were also two Czech women and one participant each from Jamaica, Nigeria and Russia.

The reigning world champion Lashinda Demus from the USA was the favorite after the 2008 Olympic champion Melaine Walker from Jamaica failed in the semifinals. The highly esteemed Russian European champion Irina Dawydowa was also eliminated there. Her teammate Natalja Antjuch, who had achieved the world best performance in 2012, was now considered one of the strongest competitors of the US athlete.

Demus was ahead of Antjuch after the first five hurdles. But the Russian pushed herself to the top before the ninth hurdle. Demus was able to keep up with the pace of Antjuch, but couldn't get past her. More than half a second behind Demus, the Czech Zuzana Hejnová won the bronze medal in third place, ahead of the Jamaican Kaliese Spencer. Behind them were the two Americans Georganne Moline and T'erea Brown, places five and six.

Zuzana Hejnová managed to win the first medal for the Czech Republic in this discipline.
