Zuzana Hejnová (born December 19, 1986 in Liberec , ČSSR ) is a Czech athlete who has specialized in the 400-meter hurdles and has twice been world champion in this discipline. At the beginning of her career she also started in sprint and heptathlon.

Athletic career

Zuzana Hejnová gained her first international experience in 2002 when she finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles at the Junior World Championships in Kingston in 58.42 seconds. The following year she won the youth world championships in Sherbrooke with a new championship record of 57.74 s and then won the bronze medal at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Tampere in 58.30 s. In 2004 she won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Grosseto in 57.44 seconds and also competed with the Czech 4 x 400 meter relay, but did not reach the final in 3: 37.89 minutes. In 2005 she won the European Junior Championships in Kaunas with a new championship and female junior record of 55.89 s, which she qualified for the World Championships in Helsinki , where she was eliminated with 57.29 s in the semifinals.

In 2006 she started for the first time at the European Championships in Gothenburg and reached the semi-finals there, where she was eliminated with 56.39 s, while she missed the finals with the relay in 3: 34.47 min. The following year she won the bronze medal behind the Romanian Angela Moroșanu and Irina Obedina from Russia at the U23 European Championships in Debrecen in 55.93 s . In addition, she again took part in the World Championships in Osaka and was eliminated there with 55.04 s in the semifinals. In 2008 she took part in the 400-meter run at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia , where she was eliminated in the semifinals with 53.16 s and reached fourth place in the relay in 3: 34.53 min. During the outdoor season, she qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where she immediately reached the final , in which she landed in seventh place with 54.97 s.

In 2009 she reached the semi-finals at the World Championships in Berlin and was eliminated there with 54.99 s. The following year she failed at the World Indoor Championships in Doha with 53.56 s over 400 meters in the first round and won the silver medal in the relay in 3: 30.05 min after the Russian team was subsequently disqualified for a doping violation. In the summer she reached the final at the European Championships in Barcelona and missed a medal there in 54.30 seconds in fourth. In 2011 she took part in the pentathlon at the European Indoor Championships in Paris , where she finished seventh with 4453 points. At the World Championships in Daegu , South Korea , she finished seventh in 54.23 seconds and fifth in the relay in 3: 26.57 minutes. The following year she was fourth again in the hurdles sprint at the European Championships in Helsinki in 54.49 s and won the bronze medal behind the teams from Ukraine and France in 3: 26.02 min. She qualified again for the Olympic Games in London , where she won the bronze medal behind the Russian Natalja Antjuch and Lashinda Demus from the United States with a season best of 53.38 s in the final . In addition, she finished sixth in the season with 3: 27.77 minutes in the final .

In March 2013 she won the bronze medal in the 4 x 400 meter relay behind the teams from the United Kingdom and Russia at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 3: 28.49 min. In addition, she reached fourth place over 400 meters in 52.12 s. In July, it was screened at the Diamond League - meeting in Paris new Czech record in the 400 meter hurdles in 53.23 s. Shortly afterwards she improved this in London to 53.07 s. At the World Championships in Moscow she then won the gold medal in a time of 52.83 s. She remained undefeated throughout the year and won all seven meetings of the Diamond Race classification. In October she was voted Europe's athlete of the year . She was also named Sportswoman of the Year in the Czech Republic. Due to injuries, a broken toe on her left foot, and a tendon injury, she missed almost the entire 2014 season.

In 2015, she started in the 800-meter run at the European Indoor Championships in Prague , but retired there with 2: 05.34 minutes in advance, while she finished fourth in the relay in 3: 32.08 minutes. In August she again took part in the World Championships in Beijing , where she successfully defended her World Championship title in the final in 53.50 seconds , making her the first woman to win the title twice in a row over this distance. The following year she was a medal candidate for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . She made it into the final , but missed a medal there in 53.92 s in fourth place. In 2017 she won the silver medal over 400 meters behind the French Floria Gueï at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade in 52.42 seconds . In the summer she reached the final at the World Championships in London , in which she was fourth again with 54.20 s. In 2018 she was eliminated from the European Championships in Berlin with 56.03 s in the semifinals.

In 2019 she contested her eighth World Championships in Doha, where she finished fifth in the final in 54.23 seconds .

In 2006 and 2009 Hejnová became Czech champion in the 400-meter run outdoors and in 2018 and 2020 over 400 m hurdles. In the hall she won in 2005, from 2007 to 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2016 over 400 meters, in 2007 she won the indoor pentathlon and in 2011 she won the 200-meter run .
